Back to Vista x64 for a bit

7100 showstoppers for me:

  • Source Engine games take ages to start up in Steam, once they are going it's OK but the delay is annoying.
  • Dynamic Folder Lag - Games folder in Start Menu, Favourites in IE8 etc.
  • No way to make WMP64 default - I love 64 Bit WMP in Vista x64 with a 64 bit codec pack as nothing else can mess with it.
  • No Hold' Em! Vista Ultimate Poker game won't run at all on Win7.
  • IE8 feels sluggish on Win 7 as compared to Vista (possibly explorer integration).
  • One too many partitions - RAID array has 3 partitions, System, Games and Store. 7 creates a 4'th on install which is messing up quite a bit.
  • Games Explorer lockdown - cant edit the launch properties of the games any more.
  • Start Menu lockdown - I like to tidy my folders up to group everything together, they've made this unintuative in 7 due to no "Explore" and "Explore All" on right click of the orb.

Most of these are from a gaming/media perspective, but 7 seems much slower due to the above than Vista x64. I'll keep my eye on things and when/if these issues are addressed I'll have another play with 7.

Ok. Thanks for telling us.

I understand were your coming from. I have run into little problems like those. The difference between you and me I suspect is you are unwilling to find and then use the solution. If you messed around with your drivers you would be amazed how much thing can be improved. For instance my friend was having audio problems using vista sound drivers but when he switched to xp drivers everything was fixed something I personally would never have thought of because of the major differences in the two os's. Most of those problems aren't even windows 7 fault I bet. Its just because your hardware drivers aren't up to date yet because windows 7 is so young. For example all the steam games on my comp work fine. Just trying to be helpful not calling you an idiot or anything I can understand you not having the time to troubleshoot the little issues that come with any new os.

    Don't have this problem.

    Don't have this problem.

What's the advantage of WMP64 over the normal version?
  • No Hold' Em! Vista Ultimate Poker game won't run at all on Win7.
Fair enough, but that's not a reason to go back to Vista.
  • IE8 feels sluggish on Win 7 as compared to Vista (possibly explorer integration).
IE is crap in general, use an alternative browser.
  • One too many partitions - RAID array has 3 partitions, System, Games and Store. 7 creates a 4'th on install which is messing up quite a bit.
Don't see how this messes up anything since the 4th partition is hidden from the system, unless you go into the Disk Management etc to manually see it, otherwise, it's just a back up of tools incase your system goes down.
  • Games Explorer lockdown - cant edit the launch properties of the games any more.
Fair point, not a reason to go back though.
  • Start Menu lockdown - I like to tidy my folders up to group everything together, they've made this unintuative in 7 due to no "Explore" and "Explore All" on right click of the orb.
I can see what your on about, but I can get into that by doing the following in the screenshot.

I don't have any "dynamic folder lag". The only issue I can relate to is the fact that they removed the ability to edit the launch properties in Games Explorer.

You can still tidy up your Start Menu, so I don't see how that's an issue in 7.
