X64 7100 shows 3.75gb Useable with 4 gigs installed

Recommended Posts

Had not had this problem with previous builds but I have a laptop with the AMD Turion X2 Ultra and ATI HD 3200 Graphics card. Previous builds showed 4 gigs of ram installed but 7106 and 7100 have showed "4 GB installed (3.5 GB Useable)".

Any ideas?

Thanks,

David

Wierd, Works fine for me...sure you have a X64 Version?

Yep, sure about that.

I checked the video card settings and "dedicated video memory" is 320mb - thats the onboard chip memory. "System memory" is 0mb. Available shared memory is 1600 or so mb but is not being used.

I'm using the MS win 7 drivers. I'll have to check ATI to see if they have released any new win7 drivers. Since its a laptop, ATI is pretty finicky about drivers and keep referring to the OEM - HP which, of course hasn't released any win7 vid drivers yet. I may try the 64 bit Vista drivers and see if it makes a difference.

I really didn't notice the issue until someone posted about it on a forum I moderate (www.touchsmartcommunity.com) and decided to check my Tablet.

Thanks,

David

Same problem here.

Using Windows 7 7100 x64 with 4GB of ram, but only 3Gb usable. No problems with 7077 an previus builds.

This is because you must activate in the BIOS remapping memory. I use the Motherboard P5B Deluxe Wi Fi AP and has this option. If it is not enabled, the operating system will not use the total memory.

Translated with live translador of Brazilian Portuguese into English.

Sorry, but my English is bad.

My board dont have this option (anyway, i dont need this with X48). By other way, Windows Vista 64 and Windows 7 7077 and older detect all my RAM, the problem is present only in 7100.

Hi

With reference to this RAM problem in Windows RC 7100; I posted a similar RAM issue a few days ago under the topic title:

"Windows 7 RC RAM Usage/RAM available for use"

I did not have the issue in builds prior to the RC build 7100.

A Gig of RAM is a lot, so are we any nearer to finding a resolution to this?

BTW, I'm using W7 RC 32bit.

Regards

Yes, as was posted in the previous thread -- you need to install a 64 bit OS in order to use 4GB of memory. Your 32-bit install is doing exactly what it should be doing -- reporting that 3 out of your 4 gb is usable.

See i have a similar problem. I have 4 Gb of ram.. Says I have 4, but only 2.5 Gb is usable.

A friend of mine said something about the type of ram used has an effect on it. (model, type, etc)

Atari

  • 3 weeks later...

I have this problem too (but first, it's not because of windows 7 and second, it's because of my motherboard).

The motherboard I use has 32bit chipset (everything else is 64bit) and that makes the RAM unusable. :(

Very weird. I have not ran into this problem. Mine does not even list anthing about "usable" just saying how much ram I have. I will keep my ears and eyes open on this issue.

If you have more than 3.90GB usable with 4GB installed, it'll only show 4GB installed not how much is usable.

A couple of reasons why you might be seeing a fair bit less than 4GB is, as Eddie mentioned, some Northbridge chips only have a 32-bit interface so after some of that 4GB of addressable space has been taken by the GPU and/or PCI, there's less than 4GB left for the RAM. For instance IIRC the 945 series. Another reason could be a buggy Beta in which case try a different release / 64-bit OS to check. Taskmanager should show you what is actually usable under Physical Memory (MB) - Total .
