+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 28, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted April 28, 2009 US, April 28, 2009 - Don Matrtick, Microsoft's senior vice president for Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft (say that three times fast), has put out a statement through the Entertainment Software Association promising to kick off E3 in "blockbuster style." In fact, the senior vice president even went so far as to say that Microsoft's presence will, "completely transform how people think about home entertainment." That's a powerful statement. Here's the complete quote from Mattrick: "Microsoft is gearing up for a big presence at E3 which will completely transform how people think about home entertainment. We're excited about the momentum that is building in the industry in anticipation of our June 1st media briefing, which will kick off E3 in blockbuster style." What would it take to transform the way you think about home entertainment? Leave a comment and let us know. Sethos
I'm waiting on the "we'll decide that" comments from some of you though ;) Have a cookie. As for the article and previous articles regarding E3, they are certainly being confident about this years E3, also pumping it up a fair bit. They better deliver. DrunknMunky Veteran Posted April 28, 2009 Veteran Share Posted April 28, 2009 We will decide, but they've won the best show 3 times in a row, why worry  Unless they totally screw up with boring ass slides for 30 mins+, have a wookie on stage or have the whole corporate line up pretending to play flutes they're fine (Y)

spenser.d
I'm waiting on the "we'll decide that" comments from some of you though ;) Why is it that, in many posts of yours these days it seems, you have to make some quick comment about waiting for some stereotypical post that may or may not show up in your thread. It really degrades from the actual content at hand. OT: E3 is shaping up to be what it used to be: Awesome. -Spenser

DirtyLarry Veteran Posted April 29, 2009 Veteran Share Posted April 29, 2009 After visiting AMD for Neowindex, I am pretty convinced a new XBox is going to be announced much, much sooner than anyone expected. Not sure it is going to be E3 soon, but who knows... I only have one simple reason for saying this... While we were there, 3 different people over the course of the day made some kind of reference to already working on and being very far along (said by one person) on "the next generation of consoles." One of the guys worked for the gaming department specifically, and I had asked him about PC gaming being dead. The talk then somehow led to Dual GPU's, which we both agreed on but then he explained why they are useless right now since most developers concentrate on consoles instead of the PC, and that is when he specifically said "wait until the next generation of consoles." So who knows, he could have been talking about the Wii as AMD also supplies the ATi GPU for it as well, but I highly, highly doubt it... I plan on interviewing this one person pretty soon, just him explaining the process behind drivers for the PC was interesting, so of course I will push him on the console side of things, but chances are he won't budge. I seriously do just have a feeling based on how he said it and the look when he said it that a new XBox is definitely coming soon. :|
Sethos
Whoa, would be so sweet if they did announce the next-generation of console already. I know a lot of people are opposed to that but being a long time PC Gamer, I like sporting the latest hardware under the hood and the consoles could definitely do with some native 1080/60FPS as a new minimum. I was just sure MS would hold on as long as possible this generation while it figures out what it will do drive wise; succumb to Blu-Ray or go all digital download? I assume if MS has something "transformational" it will definitely be on the motion controlled side of things instead. They couldn't get it out last year, so this year is it. I know a lot of people are opposed to that but being a long time PC Gamer, I like sporting the latest hardware under the hood and the consoles could definitely do with some native 1080/60FPS as a new minimum. And if you think about it, MS comes from the Computer world where they are used to someone willing over to fork over $200-$500 for a new graphics card, so why not $300-$400 on a new console? What I think may happen is console games will begin to Auto Detect similar to how PC's do now (meaning it would detect to see if you have the old 360 or the new whatever), and scale the graphics, textures, etc. accordingly, that is one way to potentially not really **** off all current owners but giving new adopters a reason to upgrade. They could still fit on a normal DVD actually, as most 360 games are what? 3-4 GB? Then eventually games will be released for the new console only, but they could do that a few years and get away with it... So I think that is one potential solution if they announce it sooner than later, same games, but different performance and visuals... I surely hope not. I was just sure MS would hold on as long as possible this generation while it figures out what it will do drive wise; succumb to Blu-Ray or go all digital download? A lot of people are going external with drives, HP for example offers a Blu-Ray external drive for their new line of notebooks, so that is definitely an option... I just figured MS wouldn't put one in the console (or external :p) because wouldn't they have to pay massive licensing fees/royalities along with the stigma of using Sony's big gun in their own console? I tend to agree, but like I said above though, no real need for Blu-Ray even with higher res and textures. Most PC game install these days are somewhere around 6-10 GB. If you only have two specific systems to include textures, etc. for, then no reason a normal DVD could probably not accommodate it all, or hell, include a 320 GB hard-drive, and go digital download. Again, only speculation on my end, and makes for fun conversation. ;) Just remember, DL said it first. :p

So I think that is one potential solution if they announce it sooner than later, same games, but different performance and visuals... I'm so unsure about all of this, I'm what you'd call a PC performance user. I upgrade regularly to keep my games running smooth and looking good, so I don't mind shelling out a huge wad of cash every few years. I have just learned over the past few years, as I've slowly become a regular console gamer, many people don't share that 'love' of performance as I do - They just want fun games that looks reasonably up to date. I doubt Microsoft would be able to pull off a release within the next year or so without getting burned, the 'console performance' user segment is quite small, a large percentage of the people who buy a console does it to escape the PC upgrade hell and just want simple fun. So they could be announcing a console without a release any time soon but that would also backfire, in the sense sales could drop because buyers would want to hold off for the new console release etc. As for your 'scaling' suggestion, it is a great suggestion but I doubt it would ever happen, the rock will roll as it always has, release a new console and shift all focus to that, end of ( with some legacy support for old models ). Plus, as mentioned, I think Microsoft is still looking for the next format. DVD won't be cutting the mustard when we start moving further up the resolution ladder and increasing effects across the board. Example, the PC version of GTA IV takes up almost 3 times what the 360 version does and that's mostly increased texture resolutions. So what I'm saying: I'd love a new console but I doubt we'll see an announcement any time soon but work will have begin to ensure they have something ready when the time comes. I can actually enjoy all of E3, not turn it into a versus battle! :p For the record I really hope there isn't new consoles announced this year, but that's just my opinion. I would rather see MS enter the portable market than bring out a new console already, they've only had the 360 out for 3 years? Or is it 4? Too early IMO in such a successful generation. 360 slim or something would be fine.

Brad.
I wouldn't be surprised if a new console is mentioned at E3, I mean the 360 has been out for over 3 years now and there's nothing stopping MS from saying a new console is due for release is 2011. The thing is with Microsoft is that they've built up a huge fan base with the 360 - mainly with teenagers, in my opinion and if they release an expensive new console soon (1-2 years, although that's way too soon) then a lot of fans may be put off which we saw happen with the PS3 at release. Nearly every single one of my friends has an xbox 360, and the only way I see the next xbox console being a hit is by including **** loads of hardware that exceeds the PS3 hardware.
