DrunknMunky Veteran Posted May 1, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 1, 2009 You can mod a console legally all you want, there is no laws against it. You can also back up your games legally in the UK. Its when you begin downloading games it's piracy ;) BTW DS, PSP, PS2 and PS1 don't require modding to play copies. Neither did the original Xbox eventually. neoadorable
correct, and while i buy all my games, piracy doesn't bother me and it doesn't bother MS too much because pirates still buy consoles and can be reformed into purchasing the odd title legitimately. The last people to buy into the whole "piracy is lost revenue" should be the game industry, they know pirates are non-customers to begin with. Nothing is lost because nothing could have been gained. GP007, you're making too much sense for a forum. they won't listen to you. However, i doubt the China-made HD DVD-esque format is something MS would go with next time around. The bottom line is HD DVD, or any other format of that ilk, is more than viable as a console-specific storage medium. What kind of 360 user would say no to a 720 just because it comes with an HD DVD drive? There's going to be a next gen tax anyway, might as well! Darrian
Aside from putting holographic displays in our living rooms I can't see Microsoft doing anything in the near future that would change my current setup (PC to 46" HDTV via HDMI). H.264 playback native to Windows 7 is a good step, but not new news now, and the DivX decoder is better, regardless (as is CoreAVC, but DivX works just as well and is free). I've said it before and I'll say it again: support MKV (and possibly MP4) in Media Center (including subtitle streams, and the ability to toggle them on or off). Not that that'd be revolutionary, since it would just be playing catch-up with nearly every other non-Microsoft video player, but it might just get me to use Media Center instead of browsing for my files in explorer and playing them with Media Player Classic. Of course, DivX has recently released their own (alpha) solution for MKV/h.264 playback in WMP and Media Center, but it doesn't support subtitles yet and will also need 64-bit support eventually. MS also needs to support playing Blu-Ray/HD-DVD in WMP and Media Center without the need to install 3rd party software like Power DVD. Using a console as a media center is even more of a joke, whether playing from an optical disc or streaming from your PC, because in most cases it would also require me to transcode and/or remux all my video files, which already take up a significant amount of space and are perfectly suitable for playback just the way they are--unless, of course, I should want to try to play them on a 360 or PS3 (not that I would consider buying a console just for this capability anyway, when a PC is obviously much more capable). Boz
I have a feeling they will be announcing new Xbox prototype and Halo 4 piece showcasing the next gen entertainment capabilities.
neoadorable
boz has nailed it on the head - i think. we all suspect the next Xbox will have both a Halo and a Gears on launch, don't we?
George P Global Moderator Posted May 2, 2009 Global Moderator Share Posted May 2, 2009 BluRay itself has been cracked for a long time now on the PC. Loads of BD rips are all over the internet. The thing with the PS3 is that they haven't (or just don't bother to) cracked the security check which is hardcoded into the cell iirc. It's not on the bluray drive that you can just flash or something. That aside, games are big, BDRs cost a pretty penny, and bluray burners still aren't cheap enough. It's not all that cost free like the old CD/DVD days before. And about size, why oh why do future games (or current ones) need load of HD CGI prerendered cutscenes? I know square loves the hell out of them (all they really wanna do is just make movies I think) but real-time in-game scenes save you tones of space on disc anyways. Jamming in hours of cutscenes may look nice but come on. If we're talking 2011 or 2012, the hardware should be more than enough to do everything in real-time. Ez8
boz has nailed it on the head - i think. we all suspect the next Xbox will have both a Halo and a Gears on launch, don't we? As pleasant as that sounds I have some discouraging news for you on Gears. http://xbox360.ign.com/objects/143/14304771.html
George P Global Moderator Posted May 3, 2009 Global Moderator Share Posted May 3, 2009 More gears is fine be it on the 360 or the next Xbox. I have no regrets.
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted May 3, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 3, 2009 They won't release Gears and Halo at launch of the next Xbox. They want to maximise sales of both. Putting them head to head means one will lose out. Why have one good year with an xmas #1 when you can have two years with two xmas #1's  They'll continue the trend of Gears 3 2010 (for example), Halo 4 2011, Gears 5 2012 etc.. George P Global Moderator Posted May 3, 2009 Global Moderator Share Posted May 3, 2009 Well it sounds like Gears 3 will be the last, so it's a triligy? I haven't yet played 2 though, :p I'm waiting for the price to drop a bit more before I get it. Damn EU prices take too long to drop here where I live. neoadorable
that makes sense, since both are in house for MS they may not want to release both together. Ez8, mentioning those franchises doesn't automatically denote i'm a fan, so it's not discouraging news at all. checked the link you provided quickly and all i noticed was a TBA2010 launch for Gears 3, so not sure what that means from your perspective. Or is the Sony propaganda dept running out of funding due to "the economy"? :ninja:
