Is there anyway possible....

Recommended Posts

My computer has 4gb ram but i am only recieving 3.2 (or round abouts) because i am stuck on x86

I am stuck on x86 because of some software i use requires a driver that i believe only works under 32-bit.

I have tested on XP64 and the driver failed, is there a chance it could work on Windows 7 or Vista (64 bit)

The reason i post this in the windows 7 forum is because of the new 'XP Mode' .... would it allow me to install this as x86, can i install drivers under xp mode.

in short.. is there anyway possible i can run some software i have for x86 system on Windows 7 64??

the driver failed on xp-64

I believe the short answer is no. I'm on the understanding xp mode would still be running at 64 bit and would therefore still need a 64bit compatible driver - which as you said you cannot get. What is the problem piece of hardware/software? there is a chance of a workaround?

No. XP Mode is a virtual machine that runs a full installation of XP completely isolated from Windows 7. In other words, nothing you install in it is accessible to Windows 7.

You might be able to install both the driver and the software in the virtual machine if it's possible to forward the hardware interface (USB, or what?) to the VM. In other words the VM would be using the hardware the driver is for directly. I'm not sure what options XP Mode will offer for that, but VMWare and VirtualBox do it.

Steinberg Cubase SX3

It is reported to work but i cant get it going. I get 'protection failed' when starting it up, even with the dongle plugged in.

XP Mode runs XP SP3 and will only run 32-bit stuff.

To run 64-bit stuff it would have to include XP x64 SP2 (which is a different OS based on Server 2003), which it does not.

I did a quick read on their site, am I right in thinking the dongle is a key to run the product?

If so this sounds like a USB problem not the software. Either the USB stick itself or the usb ports on your computer could be causing the issue. Can you read stuff off the UBS stick by going through my computer / can you read stuff off other usb sticks?

USB devices can still require drivers, even if they are only used by a single application. It isn't a memory stick that contains files, it will be a dedicated device that contains a microcontroller that responds to cryptographic challenges from the software.

That's interesting, if XP Mode can handle drivers i assume it would work?

Yes, the dongle is required to run the software. The dongle and USB device are working ok, they have been tested on x86

This is correct, the software sends messages to the dongle, if it doesnt get a return from the dongle the software will die.

Does the dongle work on 64bit though? As it sounds like driver issues for the USB stick to me. And do other USB dongles devices work in 64bit?

Wow what a draconian piece of work, require a USB dongle to run a piece of software that doesn't seem to work right in x64, not only punishing the customer, but limiting him/her in hardware upgrades.

As far as i could remember my USB flash drive worked? The only dongle i use is the one i have for this software... the driver fails to install. I cant remember the exact error but the software for the dongle didnt complete.

It has been reported to work, a quick google search brings up piratebay with a fix for vista64 that appears to emulate the dongle. Cant view it at the moment though

I believe there are newer versions that are fully supported, however the cost of new versions are around ?500 which i just cant buy at the moment.

Can anyone tell me if 'XP mode' is included in the current Seven build? or is it going to be rtm

It has been reported to work.

It sounds like the software is fine and its completely a hardware issue with the dongle. If you're using an older version then the dongle you have may not be 64bit compatible - newer versions of the dongle probably are compatible - In which case I presume buying a new dongle (im guessing you can buy a new one without having to pay for the entire software) would probably fix the issue.

Id recommend contacting the company, telling them the full version number of your software (and version of USB dongle if it has one) and telling them it doesnt work. If it should work they will probably send you another one - or they will let you know if you need a newer dongle.

There's a chance they may even just send you a driver update to your current dongle which you will need to manually install.

Worth a try, but if this is a discontinued product there's not much chance they're going to keep updating and supporting it.

As for XP Mode, it's not going to be included in any version of Windows 7. It will be a separate download, and I believe I read it will be out in a public beta in a week or two.

Your probably right, i'll give them a call.

if all else fails, tell them your dongle broke and you need a new one, Then they should (most companies who use(d) dongles would replace broken dongles for you.

From looking at the screenshots I'm thinking it does, which means you might be able to install the 32-bit driver for said USB device inside of it, making the dongle available to software running in XP Mode.
