radio.one
I have been trying to install 7100 x64 on my system for the past few days. System: AMD Athlon 64 x2 5200+, 4GB Memory, X-Fi, ATI 3850 (PCIe), 2 Optical (sata) drives, 1 IDE ATA133 200GB Seagate and 1 SATA 3.0 Samsung 500GB, Gigabyte MA69-S2H motherboard. I have tried update and fresh installs. The first error I got was the dual monitor error-- eventually I just reinstalled Vista x64. But then I came and found out about that error, so last night I tried again; with an upgrade install. It installed, but when it get to the final set-up when Windows says it upgrading and trying to start up, I get an error: 'The installation failed, reverting back to previous Windows install." It reverts back, and then asks to check for compatability. That just brings up IE and an Error 404 at microsoft.com. I had this issue before I 'corrected' the dual monitor issue. The only known issue with compatibility is the ATI Catalyst Control Center/ATI Catalyst Install. Any suggestions??

radio.one
Uninstall that before doing an upgrade. Hmmm... It could not be that easy could it?? I think I'll try that-- I'll post back. Also, when upgrading do people usually uninstall or disable their firewall/av? And lastly, the dual monitor issue, is when you have two monitors hooked up, Win 7 may incorrectly pick the wrong monitor as a primary-- so you'll get a black screen with the RC/beta stamp at the bottom right. Now, if you run two monitors at the same time, it is easy to figure that out. But, I have my HDTV connected so I can view streamed movies/tv on it. So I had no idea what was going with the install, if I had known I could have flipped my TV on to the HDMI connection and seen what was up. radio.one
Yes, you'd best uninstall firewall and av before upgrade. Yes, I did that and after I got rid of Catalyst stuff-- I tried installing it. I got all the way to the final setup screen again-- it reboots and just says you upgrade was not successful. Oh well, I guess no 7 for me.
phillypa800
you should not have any issues installing 7100. it is recommended to do a fresh install and not an upgrade. you may have potentially pulled a corrupted 7100. i have dual monitors, VISTA 64, XP32, win7 beta 7000, 4 partitions, and I overwrote beta win7 beta 7000, and all and all no issues. not even a hiccup... after 7100 installed and is up and running you can totally delete the old.windows folder by cleaning out your hard drive. the option is available. you have to dig in there and find it. good luck! Yeh, I never really considered that being an issue. Is there somewhat reputable avenue for a non-corrupted version, or is this something I'll need hash checks for...? Hawkeye666
Thropugh out the early betas I had to disable McAfee before I could upgrade successfully. I also had this problwem with the Vista SP1 beta. I eventually switched to AVG and have not had the same problem since. But any thrid parfty A/V or firewall is the first thing to disable. Also the compatibility check does flag the ATI utilities and VMWare player as problems for the install, remove and reinstall after upgrading is the answer for those. You could wait till May 5th (Tuesday) to get the official version of Microsoft if you're really concerned, otherwise a hash is enough.
radio.one
Yeh, I tried again-- it always fails. At least I'll have a short wait for the official.
radio.one
**UPDATED** I downloaded the official RC1 x64 of Windows 7 and burned it to a DVD. I set a new partition for it (out of my own Vista partition), set up a dual boot and lo and behold it works! I must say, it's very, very good. Thanks for all your help, guys.
