Pablo2008jedi
Hey all, Been thinking of sticking Windows 7 RC on my home PC, but wondering if I should do an upgrade install or not? I honestly cba to re-install everything, when I know that when RTM comes out I'll need to do the same. Is it wise to do an upgrade install from retail Vista SP1 to Windows 7 RC? statm1
Upgrading from Vista to win7 is a supported upgrade path. But, I've read to many articles and even in my own experience, upgrades are never as fast as a clean install and things just plain never feel right. You have things that just were cleaned out during the upgrade and theres just cruft that is still left from your previous install. The last upgrade I did believe it or not was back when I first bought Windows XP. I did an upgrade from Windows Me to XP before SP1 came out. I didn't really know what I was missing until the first time I did a clean install of XP. The upgrade was fine, it worked, but compared to the clean install it was not so fine. If it was me I would just bite the bullet and clean install it and install everything. So that you can get the most out of the new RC!
Pablo2008jedi
Yeah, tbh I have to agree with you, I never did the 98 -> XP upgrade due to things like that. Maybe I'll hold off till the RTM...maybe ;)
Dc'1
You could dual boot them? That's what I do, means if Windows 7 stops working I always have Vista & don't have to reinstall it :)
Lord Ba'al
Been thinking of sticking Windows 7 RC on my home PC, but wondering if I should do an upgrade install or not? No, I'd strongly advise against it. Upgrading from one OS to the next often causes all sorts of troubles. Also, it will take *a lot* longer than doing a fresh install. I honestly cba to re-install everything, when I know that when RTM comes out I'll need to do the same. Upgrading from RC to Rtm will cause nowhere near as much problems as upgrading from Vista, so you might be able to live with it... a fresh install would still be preferable, though. Is it wise to do an upgrade install from retail Vista SP1 to Windows 7 RC? Certainly not  Just look here: https://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/04/30/w...bers?cid=790590 Steven77 on 30 Apr 2009 - 22:37 For the first time with windows 7, i upgraded from Vista Ultimate to the 7 x86 RC after constantly reading how upgrading with windows is completely different compared to the days of XP and down. Since the OS uses some type of imaging, upgrading was now a viable option. My Vista install is about 1 year old, with a lot of daily use. The hard disk image(i only use one hard disk) was only about 50 gigs. A clean install with Windows 7 takes about 15-20 minutes for me. The upgrade took 4 hours, and once it finally got to the desktop, it was moving at LEAST twice as slow as Vista once did. There was about 4 programs off the bat that i was told by windows had to be reinstalled. I put up with it for about 2 days, knowing that an OS takes some everyday use to smooth itself out and work at optimal performance. Never got better, and to quit rambling, i ended up doing a clean install at the end of the 2nd day.
