DigitalE
I'm not having any luck getting Left 4 Dead to run on Windows 7 (build 7100, 64-bit). I can get through the menus and select what mission I want do, then it goes into the loading screen, but just after that the game crashes and exits to my desktop. Anyone know what could be causing the problem?
Udedenkz
Reboot into your primary OS and play from there? Problem Solved?
+jamesyfx Subscriber² Posted May 1, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted May 1, 2009 Left 4 Dead does work in Windows 7 64-bit, so it's probably a hardware issue. Get the latest driver updates for your hardware? Especially graphics drivers?
DigitalE
Reboot into your primary OS and play from there? Problem Solved? My primary OS is Mac OS X 10.5, so that wouldn't really work. Left 4 Dead does work in Windows 7 64-bit, so it's probably a hardware issue. Get the latest driver updates for your hardware? Especially graphics drivers? I have the latest WDDM 1.1 drivers for my 9400M.
PaulCabby
Works for me perfectly (32bit, build 7100) Tried turning down all the settings?
ViperAFK
Runs more stable then on vista for me. I was getting freezes and such but in windows 7 yet to have any isssues at all. I'm using a 9600gt and the latest nvidia win7 drivers. All settings max with triple buffered vsync. I am using Windows 7 64 bit build 7100. Tons of People have the issues you are describing on XP and Vista so it's hard to pinpoint what's really wrong.
DigitalE
And to think I was about to plunk down $24 for this game... Sorry Valve, I ain't buyin' something that doesn't work.
+jamesyfx Subscriber² Posted May 1, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted May 1, 2009 I'll be honest, I've had Left 4 Dead on my Mac as well (With Boot Camp) - and it worked. Sort of. Crashed 3 out of 5 times.

Sorry Valve, I ain't buyin' something that doesn't work. It does have some issues, but it's definitely worth $24 IMO. I paid 50 when it came out and have been very satisfied, such a fun game. It works good for me but occasionally would freeze (used to never freeze crash until the dlc though). Really suck it doens't work for you though :( Have you tried turning off multicore rendering? that works for a lot of people
Authentic X
Try running it in XP compatibility mode. I had the same problems with Rosetta Stone.

I had the same problems with Rosetta Stone. Tried both suggestions, still just exits to the desktop. Is there any sort of error log that it records that may shed some more light on why it's crashing? azz0r_wugg
Works fine for me, I loved the red icon to, its nice to move the mouse around on such a bright colour. Though it does create a second icon on the taskbar which is abit weird. (play it in windowed mode, full screen, then hit the windows key while on a display screen, not in game, otherwise the "gun" has control of the mouse")

Sorry Valve, I ain't buyin' something that doesn't work. Doesn't work on a Windows that isn't even out yet ? (read: finished) Might as well complain about Beta programs not worth buying, yeah.. +jamesyfx Subscriber² Posted May 1, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted May 1, 2009 Left 4 Dead crashes on Windows XP and Windows Vista as well, though. The issues it has aren't exclusive to Windows 7.

I hate it when ignorant people pull out this excuse. Scores of other people have reported Left 4 Dead to be working perfectly on Windows 7, both 32 and 64-bit. ylcard
So.. what's the point of quoting me ? I didn't say it doesn't work, I never even installed any version of Win' 7. And I've played L4D on Vista, it never once crashed, I'm gonna go with my own experience rather than made up interwebz statistcs. Point being, install Vista/XP/98/3.
Xilo
So... You expect a game running on non-rtm release of an OS to work on a set of hardware whose main purpose is to run OSX and not Windows and to run things correctly and whose drivers depend on Apple? Sure, okay... Makes perfect sense to me...

Then your not using the current drivers if your using the wddm 1.1s. Get on Nvidia's site and DL these: 185.81_notebook_win7_64bit_beta Heres a direct link: http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_noteb...85.81_beta.html I run Win7 x64 as my primary install on my work laptop, havent had an issue yet aside from the bsods from the beginning of the beta, that was resolved with updated drivers quickly though. CyberWolf
I am running it on 7/7100 and it works fine (64bit) <--- upgraded from vista... it only took 3 hours... I also am running it on 7/7000 and it crashes to desktop when you get to the menus.
Yusuf M. Veteran Posted May 8, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 8, 2009 Luckily for me, I haven't had a single issue with Left 4 Dead on Windows Vista Ultimate x64 w/ SP1. And I'm saying that because this issue isn't exclusive to Windows 7. I'm sure Valve will fix it in an update. They usually fix serious issues like this. In the meantime, you can try different drivers. Perhaps that's the cause of the issue.
leph555
I have been running build 7000 for a month or so and L4D has never crashed. In fact, the only game that I have problems is, is with Call of Duty 4 Multiplayer but that is just cause of PunkBuster.
yert*
This game is known to be buggy. As great as it is, it's not really polished. It constantly freezes for me and many people I know. I alt-tab and the game returns back to normal. Also in Win 7 64-bit (My OS) sometimes it freezes/crashes when I close the game and I have to close it via Task Manager. Valve are keen on fixing issues, it just takes them FOREVER!
Kururu
I've just recently had the same problem as the poster. I had played L4D the day before with no issues, and the next day I find it crashing to desktop. Nothing was changed from those two days. I didn't install anything, no viruses were detected, no updates were installed. I got so frustrated. I talked to Steam and they said they can't help because windows 7 isn't out. I told them I didn't think that was the problem, as I had run it up to this incident with nothing wrong. I even had the same problem with Portal, but re-installing changed that. I'm not sure what else to do, because I literally didn't change anything on my end and it crashes. I'm on windows 7 7100 ulitmate, updated drivers and everything, because like I said, I didn't change anything. Any help, at all, besides installing a older OS is much appreciated.
