Who did this and why aren't they fired?

How on gods earth is this suppose to be user friendly? Its just a bunch of icons thrown everywhere. It might have worked for office, but my god, what an eye sore.

I agree. People use Paint to quickly make small adjustments to their images and because of that the interface should be kept simple.

I understand that MS wants to make it's applications look alike, but this isn't the way to do it. The user experience should be more important than the visual aspect.

Have to agree, there is quite a few clever elements implemented but that corner definitely isn't it ... Really just looks like someone threw something together 3 minutes before lunch.

We're complaining about MS Paint now?!

MS PAINT.. of all things?

It's a revamped part of Windows 7, why can't we comment on it?

I thought this section was to discuss everything Windows 7 ... Guess not.

I understand its the section to talk about everything about Windows 7, but how often are you actually going to open MS Paint and not something like say, Paint.net in the final build of Windows 7?

Paint can do faster the most simple image works, like a quick croping.

Thousands of times, I use MS Paint regularly to resize images, just do a quick Copy & Paste of something I print screened and want to save, convert an image, add a basic frame, add some quick text, do a quick comparison collage, cropping - The possibilities are endless and it's a great application for these small things you need to do quick. Just because you don't have a use for it ...

I have Photoshop installed as well, I don't need to bring out the bazooka to kill the fly, might as well just use the fly swatter.

I might ask you similar question - who are you and wtf are you doing here? That makes total sense. Ever heard of standardizing interface? And ffs, if you cant understand what that diskette icon and arrows mean then i dont know...

It's not about failing to understand the icons, it's about clutter and seemingly illogical placement - That's just my opinion.

But Sethos, how is it clutter if that placement allowed them to remove an entire menu without losing functionality?

I think that it was an okay idea, it just failed badly :/

I'll try it out when I install Windows 7 over the weekend. Might end up liking it :p

i only saw Ribbon on office, only starting to get used to stuff there in office after like a year... things aren't easy to find anymore for me, its just random clicking all over the place till i find stuff.. looks nice, but menu's were more efficient for me

and for paint, meh what a waste.

The whole point of design decisions like this is not to make it look nicer but to make it easier to use. It is called a Unified Design.

You learn how to use the interface in one application and you can take what you learned and apply it to other applications decreasing the learning curve incurred when running a new program for the first time.

This left corner blob of icons works quite well in customer usability tests, trust me.

Well, maybe my logic works different, but oh well. Then again ive always used keyboard shortcuts to do that. But still, it makes perfext sense.

This reminds me conservative ppl crying over how bad office 2007 ui was compared to previous archaic versions.

I didn't expect to see windows old application getting ribbon'd like they've done to Wordpad and Paint.

Though I'll be honest, it doesn't seem that bad. Also, we have to keep in mind that many of us are waaay more experienced with computers and internet, and yet we'd represent only a small percentage of the people that will be using Windows 7. There are always bound to be people using MS Paint and such.

but I agree with the unified design point. Since it seems that the ribbon has worked out so well for Microsoft office that they integrated it into some of windows application in 7. I think it's a nice new idea.

but I agree with the unified design point.

It Worked for OS X and other systems in the past. I think its the best idea for MS. Hope they can respect it with every app.

Because drop-down menus in my opinion isn't clutter, bringing all that to the front however is. I have no doubt I'll get used to the looks and in a few months I might like it better but my immediate reaction since I switched from Vista to 7 was 'that looks horrible' but it is definitely a tiny issue and it won't stop me from using Paint :)

In my opinion changes like this are the best option. Now all the important options for the program are located according to the way we scan and understand information From the top to the bottom and from the left to the right. Think the way Xerox or Apple arrange information (Among others).

You may be right, perhaps in a few weeks / months my opinion on this matter may be a lot different but this is just an immediate reaction opinion from a user who's used to the 'old' interface.

I take you dont use Office 2007. Sometimes I think MS released Office 2007 many years before W7 just to get people used to the new UI ideas they were planning.

Well yeah, if Adobe were to (and heaven forbid, I'd tell ya) adopt a ribbon system for photoshop, I'll be pretty ticked off. I'm so used to the way photoshop is designed now for them to make a switch to ribbon, but then again, I am finding it a very hard time to picture photoshop as ribbon.

As for the user-friendly interface, this will most definitely work. A person, new to the computer, getting windows 7, of course will have to take time to learn how ribbon works, but it will easily master it.

No, not at home. Only place I've used the office package is at work / education centres and they tend to use an older Office Package, so this UI is 'brand new' for me.
