Minifig
The Windows 7 Sidebar has significant changes since Windows Vista. Windows Vista sidebar was completely independent of user account control. However in Windows 7 Sidebar the Gadget Sidebar and UAC are related means if you turn of or disable UAC in windows 7 then the sidebar will not work. This has been done to prevent users from installing any malicious unsigned desktop gadget in windows 7. Since most of the users prefer to keep UAC around, they wont be able to enjoy desktop gadgets and sidebar in windows 7, well here is small work around basically a registry hack to make windows 7 sidebar with gadget to work when UAC is disabled or turned off. How to Enable Sidebar & Desktop Gadget with Disable/Turned Off UAC in windows 7: 1. Click on start and type regedit on your search bar. 2. Now navigate to follow registry key in left pan of registry editor: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Sidebar\Settings 3. Right Click in right pan of registry editor to Create A New DWORD(32 Bit Value) with name "AllowElevatedProcess" and set value as "1". 4. Now close the registry editor. 5. Right click on desktop and add desktop gadgets to confirm Desktop gadget and sidebar working properly. You can download AllowElevatedProcess.reg and double click it to add it to your registry, after that, it should allow you to add gadgets with your UAC disabled. Enjoy! HawkMan
I'm less concerned about his typo, and more concerned by his belief that "most" users prefer UAC off. Especially since 90(guesstimate)% of users don't even know what UAC is and certainly not how to turn it off. And even the smart users who do know and don't want the UAC popups will set it to silent mode.

bfoos
If your UAC is off, in Windows 7, by default, Gadgets and the Sidebar, will not work. This makes them work. Maybe for the beta, but they fixed this a long while ago. Gadgets work just fine with UAC disabled. Old tip is old.

lee31
Where's the OP been for the past couple of months? This issue was fixed way back in build 7022 if not before and that work around is old news and irrelevant in the RC.
