Toxicfume Veteran Posted May 1, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 1, 2009 Recently I've been getting all sorts of errors from all programs that I can't do "so and so action" because I do not have Administrator Priviledges, eventhough I AM the Admin. I couldn't even install the Office 2007 SP2 update because of this. I already tried making sure that I am the admin; I retook ownership of the entire Hard disk, and made sure in control panel that I am the administrator..but I still keep getting these errors. I know Windows 7 is beta and all that, but I'm sure not everyone has this problem and I'm sure it's a glitch that can be fixed. I'm using Windows 7 RC1, but I was also getting this error before the upgrade from Windows 7 Beta (Build 7000) If anyone has any idea, I'd appreciate your help, thanks :)
jamesVault
I retook ownership of the entire Hard disk by doing that you've completely screwed up the Windows security.
Toxicfume Veteran Posted May 1, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted May 1, 2009 doing that you've completely screwed up your Windows installation. Maybe..but it got rid of a LOT of problems I was facing earlier (I couldn't even run simple apps), that is now working perfect.
jamesVault
I couldn't even run simple apps  format your hard drive and reinstall Windows from scratch :D
Toxicfume Veteran Posted May 1, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted May 1, 2009 No need to do that, it's working fine now. Anyone? How do I gain Administrator privileges? OF course I'm not going to run RC1 forever, I will format and install it definitely, but I need a quick fix right now.

Throwing this out there, but perhaps your account might be marked as administrator, but you don't have the privileges set properly.
hdood
What do you mean by "administrator privileges"? I am going to go out on a limb and guess that upgrading from the beta has somehow hosed the ACLs of the objects you're trying to manipulate, and that the cure is pretty much a reinstall. Possibly, upgrading build to build really isn't a great way to go about upgrading one build from another.. as it introduces a whole host a fookeries.. like this one for instance. He's probably better off installing a fresh copy of Win 7 7100..
Toxicfume Veteran Posted May 1, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted May 1, 2009 In my first post I mentioned that I've been having this problem since the first Beta, build 7000. So it did not happen after the upgrade.
hdood
Well there is really not enough detail, as you haven't said exactly what the problem is. It really sounds like your ACLs are messed up (maybe the ID of your user doesn't match) and that you don't have access to modify the resources you want. Being administrator doesn't automatically give you access to everything, it only gives you the ability to change access rights. You say you've taken ownership of everything on the disk (which is wrong, not everything should have your user as owner), but there are still other things like the registry where ACLs are used. terminx
This reminds me a little of what happened when I stuck 7068 on my gf's computer... everything went okay, except that the installation process forgot to make the account it created for her an administrator. After log in there was no way to change ANYTHING, because the built-in Administrator account is disabled by default and has no password. The dialogs would come up asking for permissions elevation but the whole password field was gone, pretty much reducing it to a window with some text and a cancel button. Thankfully, that disabled built-in Administrator account works in safe mode if there aren't any other admin accounts active, which worked fine to give her account the proper permissions. Toxicfume Veteran Posted May 1, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted May 1, 2009 Looks like there are a lot of intricate things needing to be done to fix this, I guess I'll just reformat and reinstall. Thanks guys. :)
