Minifig
When you resort to tactics within the realm malice, are your actions still benevolent? Even Balance should consider this question while working on PunkBuster. While hackers/cheaters are an annoying, when the tools that keep them out operate maliciously the tool maker has gone too far. PunkBuster?s behavior is absolutely uncalled for. There is absolutely no reason to have a legitimate piece of software download itself from a remote site and reinstall/restart every 15 seconds to 5 minutes. This is how PunkBuster works right now with its PnkBstrA.exe and PnkBstrB.exe services. PnkBstrA.exe will redownload, reinstall, and restart PnkBsterB.exe periodically while in a game ?protected? by PunkBuster. If anything goes wrong PnkBstrA.exe will kick the user from a server and give a error in the 13xxxxxx range. PnkBstrB.exe is what actually looks for hackers/cheaters and kicks them. PunkBuster also looks for unknown APIs and will kick you if it finds any, this is the issue it has with Windows 7. ?Why are you playing games on a beta OS?? What?s the point of a beta OS? To test things, that?s the point of beta releases. By playing, or rather try to play, a game I?m testing Windows 7. Since I built a new (for me) computer that is running Windows 7 (64bit), there really is no going back to XP (I do not have Win XP 64bit edition). My gaming is limited to offline games, any Valve title, or Test Drive Unlimited. Basically, anything that doesn?t depend on the horribly broken PunkBuster. The real shame is that Even Balance has not made visible effort towards supporting Windows 7. The beta is very solid, a release candidate should be out soon, and at that time the Windows 7 ?API? will be ?locked? and Punk Buster should be able to be updated to work with Windows 7. If, upon public release of Windows 7, PunkBuster still does not work properly, I?d like to see a someone bring a class action lawsuit against Even Balance for negligence (yes, PunkBuster has angered me to that point). someone[/i]l]. At least someone has a good idea on this posting. Contact Punkbuster and complain via this site until they fix it. How about you? Have you given up hope? Most of my good games, CoD 4, Bf 2 and etc can't be played now because 90% of the servers are PB'd and those that aren't don't have any players in them. Seriously. Screw EvenBalance for not letting us test Windows 7 with our games.

John Freeman
Although they cant be blamed now really, as its not quite their responsibilty to support win 7 (them being ###### is another story), id like to see what happens when win7 hits gold.
Minifig
Have you seen:https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=766398 I wonder if that'll work in build 7000.
ObiWanToby
Punkbuster works in RC1. At least with COD4 World at War and Crysis. This is tested on 7 x64 7100. I have a suspcion that Evenbalance supports 7100 and 7000 because those are the official public released builds. The leaked versions had different version numbers which might have tripped the system. Yusuf M. Veteran Posted May 1, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 1, 2009 In Windows Vista, I always had to manually update PunkBuster for my games (Call of Duty 4, Battlefield 2, and Battlefield 2142). Perhaps you have to do the same for Windows 7. You can download PBSetup v3.4 here.
-Hiroshi-
It's on PunkBuster to fix it, a software maker should update to accommodate the OS, not the other way around. Personally I can't stand Punkbuster, something about them irritates me. Don't feel bad though, I got a lot of software that doesn't work in 7. Deamon tools, ad-muncher, and so on. ViperAFK
wow just wow someone need to take a walk or something .... really No I agree with everything he says. And punkbuster is terrible in every OS not just win7. I truly hate this piece of software.

Stetson
Maybe, just maybe, every software company doesn't download every build of Windows 7 that is released by MS or via the intertubes. The release candidate will probably get more attention from companies, but the point of these prereleases is to allow them to begin working on compatibility issues so that they can be solved by the final release of the operating system, not for them to race to keep their software working for all the people testing a nonfinal OS. cropcircles
Can I safely stop / disable / remove these new components when not playing games? Yes. However, please keep in mind that the PnkBstrA service is designed to run all the time and auto start when the computer is booted. If you choose to alter this behavior manually (which is an advanced topic beyond the scope of this FAQ), keep in mind that in order to play on PunkBuster enabled servers going forward, PunkBuster will need unblocked communication with a running and working PnkBstrA service when the game is started. Otherwise, PunkBuster servers will kick from gameplay. To manually install/uninstall the components, users may use our PBSVC Setup Program. However, uninstalling the new service components will disable PunkBuster and may prevent playing on PunkBuster servers. PBSVC can be downloaded from here. http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsvcfaq.php
maydax
It doesn't work with x64 RC 7100. I still get kicked for Unknown Windows API Function [131152] after applying all the suggested fixes and updates. What ticks me off is not all games are kicking for API errors in 7.

crewxp
Damn.. seriously, screw this! Punkbuster really needs to get on their game. To me, they seem like a couple of kids that knows basic memory/injection techniques, that quickly got together and whipped up something to gain profit. ....Providing anti-cheat protection 'by any means neccessary'... aka: They don't care who it hurts, as long as it does its job. Better off keeping the games safe and disallow Windows 7 users, than to allow Windows 7 users and risk cheaters, right? And they they say 'we dont support beta OS's' because they're lazy and can't keep up with technology. I wish there way another Anti-Cheat organization that competed against them to keep them on their ball. Haha anyways, rant done. Has anyone successfully gotten theirs to work? morphen
Oh come on, Beta/RC; code changes all the time. and until the RC, so does the API. so, if they were to support every build, then they would have alot of work on their hands.
Sethos
To me, they seem like a couple of kids that knows basic memory/injection techniques, that quickly got together and whipped up something to gain profit. Sounds about right. Punkbuster is and always has been trash. It's like a stone-age piece of software that just can't catch any cheats, only some basic scripts some kid wrote. I have played many games since the dawn of proper multiplayer gaming, many of them sporting Punkbuster and not one of those games didn't have a wildfire of a cheating scene because Punkbuster is so easily beat. It's annoying to have this amateur piece of software so deeply rooted into many games and lots of servers deciding to use it because they want that sense of false security ... Raa
I had a lot of trouble with PunkBuster when I reinstalled BF2 on my XP computer last week. After 3 hours and 4 kicks, I got it working. To be honest, I shouldn't have to go through that trouble.
