Shasoosh
Hey guys! So i've been using 7 for a while now and yesterday i've decided to delete my Vista install. The problem is that on the same hard drive i gave 400 Gb of stuff i can't backup so basically i can't format the drive BUT i want to delete all the vista related folders. System Volume Information , Program Files (x86) , Windows etc'. I've tried doing so trough 7 and trough another installation i have of Windows Xp. Both of them gave me an error that those folders are protracted. How can i get around it? (I've tried Unlocker - Delete after reboot - no go) Thanks

Abood
try this https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?show...#entry587653402 and try to delete the folder using command prompt start > run> cmd.exe............. or try this: http://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversion/index.php/t89218.html Edited May 2, 2009 by Abood
Fedr0
Right click on those folders, select Properties, then Security, then Advanced, then Ownership and select your account, then click on apply. You should be set. I translated all of those as I'm on a different language, but you should be able to find what I wrote.

Abood
if you couldn't delete them then use partition magic make another partition (you don't need to delete any thing when you make another partition) then back up you files and format the partition where the windows vista files are.................. Shasoosh
thanks, but i'll wait for another solution. This is also my boot drive so i can't really create a partition and move files around plus i can't really move the "stuck" folders.

Subject Delta
There isn't an easier way. Due to the way Vista layers security on system files to prevent malware altering their contents you will have to go through them and take control and change the permissions manually. It can be done, but it is a long winded and frustrating experience. Personally I would recommend getting a second drive cheaply so you can move a bit of data to it and format your old Vista install out
pinTero
What about some bootable Linux system? SystemRescueCd can read/write ntfs partitions and should wipe these folders with no problem..
Shasoosh
^ i've started SystemRescueCd and went to the GUI Xorg, there i started some kind of commander (blue screen, 2 tabs) I'm not really familiar with linux, how can i change drive letters there? all i see there is the folders of the SystemRescueCd environment. pinTero
To see the Windows files, you have to mount your ntfs partition first, using ntfs-3g. Thats what i would do from the command line: Create a nice new directory for your mount: mkdir /mnt/vista And then mount your partition: ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /mnt/vista (assuming you only have 1 partiton) Now fire up midnight commander (the one you probably saw already): mc Navigate to /mnt/vista and wipe the stuff using F8. Hope i made some sense

pinTero
:| Thats interesting to know, since i haven't had a chance to manage Vista systems with it yet. Found some discussion over Ubuntu forums, looks like the problem could be related to 'junction points' Vista has created and which can not be easily deleted at all. You might try to connect your drive to some other Vista/7 system and see what happens... http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1078374
