Sunset
I've been using Win7 since the first public beta. Before now i was using build 7048. I did an upgrade to 7077 and had several problems which put me back on 7048 till 7100. However, a bug came up where, when switching users, the computer would hang for a second or so. The problem is that if left locked for a long period of time, logging in causes either a hang of a few seconds to a total lockup. I've searched google and several forums and been unable to find a cause or fix. I'm sorry if this has another topic but i've been unable to find anything on it. System Specs: Intel Core 2 Duo 3.00Ghz (3.375Ghz) 4GB DDR2 800 Nvidia Geforce 8800GT OC 185.81 MSI P7N Sli-Platinum I'm using onboard audio, dual monitor desktop, along with a Ideazon Fang gamepad, G15 keyboard and MX Revolution mouse. I would like any help on this matter. I installed 7100 last night and this bug seems to have remained. If you need any other info, feel free to ask but thats all I have on the bug. No errors in event viewer, no malware, no viruses. Using Outpost Security Suite Pro 2009 for firewall, malware and viruses. Start up consists of AIM, YIM, MSN, Skype, Setpoint, Profiler, Zengine, LCD Manager, and the Realtek sound panel.
wd40
Did you do a clean install or upgrade?
Inctye
I have the same issue with the login screen hanging for a few seconds after entering the password. I don't think it has anything to do with the install, just a bug MS needs to fix.
Guest xiphi
Do it happen every time? If so, try doing a clean install, keep trying to reproduce the issue as you install things one at a time. The issue sounds driver related so I would start with those first. Also be sure to start with as little hardware, disconnect external hard drives, controllers, etc.
Sunset
Completely clean install. My only upgrade experience was 7048 to 7077 which ended up in a botched install which lead to a clean install of 7048 then a clean one to 7100. Just to make sure its all clear. The slight hang is like a second or two, barely noticable, but if I switch users to lock the system then leave it sitting, sometimes it'll hard lock, others, it'll lock for a few seconds then resume. Sunset
I'm starting to wonder if its possible that uTorrent might be causing it. If I remember correctly, the lockups occured when uTorrent was left on during the locked time. Could anyone confirm or deny this? I've also altered my pagefile settings so that Windows has 2 System managed ones on 2 drives. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, since my system is usually always on and can't be left logged in. This bug occured in build 7048 as well but only after I tried upgrading to 7077 then clean installing back to 7048. As far as i know, all my drivers are up to date. Using nvidia's 7 beta drivers because the vista ones cause an odd bug of a pointless, superbar like, bar that gets bigger if you expand the superbar and remains. This bar also has the same 'always on top' the super bar has. This seems to only happen with the vista drivers. I've had no problems starting or using my system, the hang only occurs after being locked for a long period of time. Last case was 8 hours locked, give or take a bit. I didn't have this problem until after the 7077 botched upgrade. Edited May 3, 2009 by Sunset
Guest xiphi
Currently, Outpost doesn't seem to support Windows 7. While it may appear to work fine, it could case problems with file access. I had this problem with OneCare when I figured out how to get it installed on 7. My suggestion is to try disabling or removing Outpost completely and see if anything changes. The reason why I say this is because I did have problems with uTorrent and other applications not closing properly. They would appear in the task manager would no way of ending the processes, but no GUI would be available for uTorrent or the application would lock up completely. Sometimes that application was Explorer. Logging off would take several minutes due to this. Just give my suggestion a shot and see how it turns out. If anything, it's best to use such suites that support Windows 7 to avoid any other issues.
Sunset
Well I switched to Outpost after starting to have constant problems with Kaspersky's 7 beta. Outpost does seem to work fine but I did wonder. On a fresh boot, i have no internet for a minute or so then it starts working. I'll give it a try.
Sunset
I've switched to AVG and Windows Defender/Firewall. I'll report back after i've had a chance to test it. So far it seems to be working better, little less delay in login. If you have any good, free Win7 x64 AVs or Suites that might be better, i'm willing to try them. Guest xiphi
I've gone without using antivirus software for the time being until Microsoft's "Morro" is released. I've been formatting so often between builds that it hasn't been much of an issue yet. Kaspersky's beta for 7 just didn't have a good feel, lowered performance, and was always in my face. Then again, this was in comparison to OneCare.
Sunset
Just wanted to update everyone. So far it's been working flawlessly. The only bug that seems to remain is that Left 4 Dead locks up for a bit randomly, but that may be driver related. Thanx for the help.
