MacBook White to stay?

Recommended Posts

I am planning to buy myself a MacBook White about my exams, which will be about the end of June. Is there any chance, in general consensus, that the product could disappear as part of WWDC?

hrm...worrying. Apple Store is down at the moment so if we see a price drop of the white MacBook, then we can be pretty sure it's on the way out.

Any other opinions? Interested in general consensus, it will be a real pain if I have to order sooner than planned.

There are rumors of price drops at WWDC... if they drop the MacBook White, they'll probably have a Unibody to replace it at the same price point. They're far better built, anyway. The style is debatable (I love it), but you can't debate that it's far sturdier.

Wait until WWDC before buying anything (which you won't). Yes there is a chance with the low end Macbook uni-body replacing it, so I would wait.

I would be planning to wait until after WWDC, but I really want a Mac at the price point of the MacBook White and it will be really annoying as the lowest end unibody is ?200 more.

That's the problem with Apple that anything below $700 dollars is not business for then, they prefer to update it and keep the price high than selling to a low price. I have an iMac but this is why Apple will never be adopt by the masses.

The problem is, you can bet that they'll kill off the MacBook White and then not bring the price down of the unibody, once again pricing me out.

It would be suicide for Apple to cut a low-price laptop at this point. If they get rid of the white MacBook, I guarantee something will be there at the same price point to replace it.

Well we can always hope...but to be honest, the MacBook isn't really low price at all, especially in the UK.

Just wish it would reopen so I could see what was going on. Once we see, I'll come back to you guys for advice :p

I doubt they will get rid of it just yet. The current MacBook White (With the 2.0GHZ 1066FSB CPU and Nvidia graphics) only came out in January. Its still a perfectly capable machine and it looks good, but I would say that as I got one recently :p

Back with no changes whatsoever. Well, wasn't that a waste of time. Back to my original plan of waiting til the end of June :)

Its still the best laptop you can get for that money IMO

Yep, I would agree. You can get Windows laptops, but you don't get the polish of OS X and the overall build quality :) Or the pure looks!

I just have to hope they don't wipe the MacBook White before the end of June - I would be so ****ed!

Nope, they were upgraded to Nvidia silently a little while ago, few months back.

I see, I missed that. Still that makes the white macbook a great machine for the money.

I really wanted to wait til after the exams really :( What is the final verdict? Before or after WWDC?

Even if they discontinue the white macbook, you can buy in MacMall or other online store. That does not mean that they will be dead. Only in the Apple Store.

I was going to get a white macbook end of this month. The unibody macbook's screen sucks, I hate it and I wont ever buy that one if it comes with that screen (its too glossy and gives me a headache when i mess with it in the apple stores). I am going to wait to find out if there is a price drop for the white model, I'd be mad if I spend $1,058 (after tax) to find out two weeks later its way cheaper. I'll wait.

I agree about the screen. I'm really dreading the day my MBP dies. I really don't want to buy one with a stupid glossy screen. It's terrible for design work. :/

Indeed, like it's nice and crisp. However it gives me a headache after a little use and its not worth it for that reason, at least for me.

  • 4 weeks later...

Slight change for MacBook White yesturday:

- Processor bump to 2.13ghz (C2D P7450)

- RAM speed increased to 800mhz

- Hard drive increased to 160GB

- OS X version 10.5.7

Not sure if its available on all markets yet, rest of specs are the same, model number is MC240LL/A

I guess the update is to offer better value for money against similar PC offerings in advance of the back to school season.
