delt31
Right now I have 3ghz processor and 4gb ram running 32 bit OS. My card is relatively crappy (ASUS EAX550GE/TD/256M Radeon X550 256MB ) so would buying a better card improve my overall performance? I am not concerned about it playing games better - just cpu wise If so - any recommendations - looking to spend 75 to 100 and I love newegg.... thanks
crazlunatic
your card doesn't seem too crappy for normal use
delt31
Thanks so you don't think a new card will increase overall performance for browsing and general CPU use? Again I don't care about games
booboo
When you say 3ghz proccesor, do you mean a pentium D 3.0ghz processor?
delt31
Sorry dual core amd athlon 3ghz
booboo
Oh that's fine then. The graphics card would make slight improvements to the aero effects, but apart from that I can't really thinkof much more. Question though, do you find it slow? :s
Brandon Live Veteran Posted May 5, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 5, 2009 It looks like that isn't a DX10 card so I'm guessing it doesn't have a WDDM 1.1. driver. So if you upgraded to a card that did support WDDM 1.1, then you might notice an improvement. For some details about why, read this: http://blogs.msdn.com/e7/archive/2009/04/2...erformance.aspx

Question though, do you find it slow? :s No I don't find it slow - in fact it's pretty good but I have updated everything on my pc and that is the last thing. I wonder if it would make a big difference and I've been reading that video cards have made others snappier.
Dashel
Yes, grab an ATI 4670 or a 4830/4770 if you have the extra scratch.
delt31
Yes, grab an ATI 4670 or a 4830/4770 if you have the extra scratch. Here's the one I'm looking at - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814161252 I just want to make sure this will make a good difference. I don't need a lot of card memory b/c I already have 4gb. this one looks pretty good.
Access Denied
I almost have the exact same specs on an nVidia 9800 GTX+ and its night and day diff from the 128MB I had before.
Dashel
The difference won't be huge but it should be noticable. My laptop only has a RadeonMobility x1450 and my desktop has a 4850 and there is a nice bump in smoothness when moving between taskbar thumbnails and other transition effects. Desktop responsiveness is sometimes hard to pin down. Unlike Vista, you really trade a fair amount of functionality without full Aero. Plus, a competent graphics card always comes in handy in unexpected places.
dafin0
if you have a little bit of money laying around it wouldnt hurt to buy a cheap graphics card that supports Direct x 10, you should notice it running smother and using up less RAM than before
delt31
well i went for the gfx card I posted above - 70 bucks after mail in rebate so I'm happy. I don't expect it to be huge (that's huuuuuuuuuuge - stern reference) but it should be worth it considering what I have now. I got the 512mb card memory b/c i didn't think i needed more than that (i have a lot of ram - 4gb). Is that not the right way to look at it? It has a couple of other memory frequencies that seem good and it got great reviews so it should work nicely. I didn't want to break the bank but like another person said - just to get direct 10x in there. Plus my pc should be able to play 1080p flawlessly. I hope it improves more than just the transistion between windows though - I'm sure I'll feel it elsewhere. Also - prob a dumb question but the gfx card has nothing to do with the POP of your picture displayed on your monitor right? That's the monitor itself correct? thanks
Lord Ba'al
Right now I have 3ghz processor and 4gb ram running 32 bit OS. Which means, you effectively only have 3GB :pinch: Install Win7 x64 if you want to use your full 4GB.
