Sean B. Veteran Posted May 5, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 5, 2009 Welcome! Thanks for downloading the Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC). This is the last big step toward finishing Windows 7. With your help, our engineers can check the fixes and changes they made based on Beta tests. We rely on people like you to use the software before it?s commercially released. So if you haven?t already installed the RC, please go ahead. Having thousands of people use the software helps us test thousands of hardware and software combinations?a key to making things work great for you. Getting started You don?t need to do anything special to help with the testing. All you need to do is use the RC, and your PC will send information to our engineers. IMPORTANT: If you are using the Windows 7 Beta, you will need to do a clean installation of the Release Candidate. The Installation Instructions will help you get started. Read them first to make sure you?ve got the information you need for a smooth installation. As you use the RC, we hope you?ll discover: - It works the way you expect: it?s fast, reliable, and works with your hardware and software - It?s simple and easy to use so you can just dig in and use it right away - It helps you do the things you want to do, and new things you may not have imagined Learn more - Learn more about Windows 7. - Use the Windows 7 online forums to exchange technical information with other testers. - Get news about Windows 7 on the team blog. - To get more general information about Windows make sure you?re subscribed to the Exploring Windows newsletter. So, enjoy trying out the RC. We?ll check back with you in about 10 days with more information. Thanks again for your investment in Windows 7. Lee G. Veteran Posted May 5, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 5, 2009 where are the RC keys to download for activation? The RC key shows just before you download the RC. Downloading it now. Does the the 64-bit version require 4GB of RAM? You can use x64 with less than 4GB. For the time being, I'm running the 64-bit version with only 2GB RAM. Dark_ph0enix
stupid question I guess, but what happens in March 2010? Is there anyway to activate it online, legally, so that it works fully, or would I need to remove it, and install Windows Se7en once it's "officially released?" The reason I ask is that I'm getting a new NetTop in a few months, and a relative is having my current one, and I think Se7en would be easier for him to use. From March 1 Windows 7 will shut down after two hours. To avoid interruption, it’s recommended that you and your customers rebuild test machines by using a valid Windows operating system before Windows 7 Beta and Windows 7 RC expire. Windows will automatically notify you that the expiration process is about to begin. Two weeks later, your PC will shut down every two hours. For Windows 7 Beta, the bihourly shutdowns will begin July 1, 2009. The software will expire August 1, 2009. For Windows 7 RC, the bihourly shutdowns will begin March 1, 2010. The software will expire June 1, 2010. Activating Windows 7 RC means that the copy will last until the expiry date.
Dark_ph0enix
I understand that - what I mean is, lets say I download the RC, and install it onto my NetTop. I then hand that off to my grandad, to use as his new media centre. What I wanna know, is what I'd have to do, in order to allow him to keep using Windows Se7en after March 2010 - would I have to remove the OS, and do a fresh install, from a commercially purchased installation DVD, OR is there someway of upgrading the RC version, to the full final version, online? Basically I don't wanna wipe the machine, put this onto it, let my grandad put all his stuff onto it, and then have to mess around with it again come March 2010 :)
Minifig
Downloading it now. Does the the 64-bit version require 4GB of RAM? Nope. I'm running it on 2 and it's fast as a banshee in heat.

Dark_ph0enix
You would need to format Windows 7 RC and install the final copy of Windows 7. That's what I thought, unfortunately - just wanted to be 100% sure. Still, I guess I could put it on there, and if he likes it, he could always buy the final version. Cheers for the info :)
