Sailorcancer
My brother wanted to try 7 on his laptop. His laptop was runing Vista Home Basic so he wanted to try 7 Home Basic. So I saw on zdnet how to pick the other SKUs of 7. I tried the product keys that I got from MS when I downloaded the RC for 7 but none of them work when I try to activate Home Basic. It says "The product key you have entered will not work with this edition of Windows 7. You must either run Windows 7 Setup or enter a Windows 7 Home Basic Product key" How can I get this activated? What kind of setup are they talking about? Thanks.
Eric Veteran Posted May 5, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 5, 2009 You can't. The public preview versions are Ultimate-only.

hdood
Yes. He will have to reinstall. The fact that the downloadable ISO is Ultimate-only and requires hacking to enable other editions should have been a clue? The setup it's talking about is the Windows 7 setup, where you can reinstall the edition that matches your key (Ultimate in this case.)
blunden
What is the setup they are talking about? So after 30 days he will not be able to use it then? He would probably be able to rearm after 30 days to get another 30 days, and so on for a total of 120 days.
Sailorcancer
Well atleast he can try it for a month. I forgot does 7 have a downgrade thing that will let him go back to Vista?
hdood
No. No version of Windows has that. He will have to format and reinstall Vista from scratch.
