Examinus
Does WMP report files as being 0 bytes for anybody else? It did it with me in 7000 and I hoped it would be fixed, but hasn't. Is it a known bug? Some songs are reported as being the correct size, but the vast majority are 0.
SlasherKG
I noticed this as well, but do not recall it happening in 7000. Windows Explorer sees the correct size.
Preppy Veteran Posted May 5, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 5, 2009 Does a 0 byte file show up as 0 byte on a second computer? I'm wondering if this is file corruption that can be reproduced on a second machine or if it's some local library/file system corruption.
Examinus
I don't have a second machine to access the files on at the moment. All I can tell you currently is that they appear as the right size in Explorer (including Libraries) and play fine on my Xbox 360.
Examinus
Any ideas?
Preppy Veteran Posted May 6, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 6, 2009 Psychically? No. :) If you want to upload a file I'll take a look.
Examinus
Hi, sorry for the late reply...I didn't have a computer last night. I don't know what Neowin's policy on uploading music is, but I've attached an MP3 that is reported at 0 bytes in WMP but is in fact 873KB (I presumed the actual size wouldn't matter). I hope it gives you some idea what's going on! 01_Human_Traffic___Star_Wars_Theory.mp3
UncleSpellbinder
@ Examinus Used your MP3 and it seems to be an issue on your end as the file shows correct size for me. I'm using Win 7, 7100 RC (64-bit)
Unimatrix Xero
ive got the same problem with my WMP all songs show as '0'but they all play fine
Examinus
Thanks to you both for that. I didn't think it was a file corruption as my music has been transferred to more computers I can remember and 7 is the only OS this has ever happened to. I was bitten by the WMP bug in 7000 and I assumed that might be it, but you've obviously disproved that UncleSpellbinder. It also happens to new music I've downloaded and possibly even ripped, but I'll have to check that (I'm on my Mac at the moment).
Preppy Veteran Posted May 14, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 14, 2009 What are you using to tag or rip your music? I strongly suspect your tagger is busted and is using the TLEN field to indicate seconds, not milliseconds per spec. The earlier attached Star Wars MP3 worked fine for me on my Windows 7 RC system. If anybody has any "bogus" duration MP3 files -- it'd be good to look at them, but right now I'd suggest that their TLEN (and thus the tool that created / tagged them) is highly suspect. Preppy Veteran Posted May 14, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 14, 2009 Nevermind, I'm retarded and was thinking of a different issue I was looking at today. The file DOES work fine here, but it's got naught to do with TLEN/duration issues. =P
Guest xiphi
I'm also experiencing this issue even with mp3's ripped using WMP12. Some songs from the same album will have the correct Size but others just display 0 bytes. Not a big issue since they all play fine.
Neyht Member Posted May 14, 2009 Member Share Posted May 14, 2009 (edited) I got it too. Files play fine but report zero size in wmp.... I've never noticed it since I don't often look at that information. Are your files stored on a removable drive by any chance? Did you perform an upgrade install? Guest xiphi
The files on my desktop are stored on a USB drive and the laptop has the files stored on the same HDD as the OS, and both have clean installs of Win 7 RC. So, I doubt where the files are stored has anything to do with it.
Gibletz
I get the same when using a second partition to play my MP3s off of.
Neyht Member Posted May 14, 2009 Member Share Posted May 14, 2009 I think all of the files on my f:\ drive report zero bytes in size except for a few...very few. The files I've added today report the correct size....hmm.
Examinus
All of my music is stored on a second partition. I use WMP for everything: ripping, tagging etc. My Windows 7 is a clean install. It seems to be a common problem! (I've also just listened to the track I uploaded and realised it has some bad language in it, so my apologies if that's been a problem for anybody!) Preppy Veteran Posted May 22, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 22, 2009 If you stop the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service and then use WMP's Tools:Advanced:Restore Media Library to let the player reset the Media Library - does the content upon rebuild show up as the correct file size? Examinus
Yes! Everything is displaying as the correct size now. What do you think caused it?
Preppy Veteran Posted May 22, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 22, 2009 Some form of library corruption, evidently.
Examinus
I'd say that was the problem. What caused it?
Preppy Veteran Posted May 22, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 22, 2009 If you can get me a way to reproduce this, I might be able to tell you that. Right now all I know is that you had 7000 and maybe 7100 and that's all I know about your system. :) Post-mortem debugging or analysis on data store corruption isssues can be pretty brutally difficult. If you had had a corrupt library in 7000 and *upgraded* to 7100, then it happened in 7000 and got migrated upwards. I don't think there's anything useful I can tell you here given the limited amount of information that would be contextually available to me as someone who doesn't have direct access to the system. :)
Examinus
I think all the info I can give has been in this thread, but if there are any logs or anything I can send you I'd be glad to. It doesn't seem to be an isolated problem though.
Examinus
Gah! The problem's come back now, seemingly after this happens.
