Calum Veteran Posted May 23, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 23, 2009 More like for stupidity reasons :rofl:It's not like using new fonts instead of the crappy old ones would break any apps or something: "Uh-oh, xyz.exe crashed because you used a different font!" Just wondering - are you a software developer? Do you understand every single thing about software development? Also, do you understand everything about how Windows itself works in relation to fonts? I'm not trying to be rude here at all, but as a software developer, it really annoys me when people jump to conclusions and blame the company for something they cannot control. (I'm not saying you are right or wrong in this case, I'm just suggesting you and others don't jump to conclusions about software development if you don't know everything about it)

I'm sure that microsoft is taking every precaution to make sure that doesn't happen again. Vista got a bad rap because things didn't work at first launch and the media ran with it and it created the negative vista stereotype. Those incompatibilities weren't all for nothing though a lot of features in windows 7 that people are saying are great came about because of changes in vista that caused vista's compatibility issues. In this case, seeing as how it's no problem to change fonts for English text in Windows, it's a fair assumption that it should be equally easy to do so for Japanese text. I think the reason is simply that it's either been overlooked or that it affects a small enough share of the customer base that there's no point in messing with it, even if implementing a change is (presumably) low-risk. Just my two cents. :)

No one will ever know every single thing there is to know about software developing, which is why it's okay to speculate, but not assume - in my eyes :) Developers get a lot of flack a lot of the time because users don't understand why something has been done. They don't like it and they blame those developers when they do not know the reasons for the change :) However, speculation is fine and like you say no one will know for sure until a Microsoft developer can confirm. If it made sense for this font change to be done and it didn't take much effort, I bet it will be because of compatibility issues - even if it affected only a minority of users. But hey, no one will know for sure until it is confirmed :)
Lord Ba'al
Just wondering - are you a software developer? Well, I know a good deal about developing, since I've studied Computer Science - until I finally realised that it's nothing that I want to do for a living, as it was ever more and more grating on my nerves :pinch: So I then switched to Japanese, which is a great deal more fun  Thus I understand fully well that changing a font doesn't cause any stability issues or somesuch and doesn't break an app. The worst thing that could happen is when the new font is a little bit bigger and you haven't dimensioned the text fields sufficiently, the text may be cut off a little at the end. That's most easily fixed though, just make the text field a little bit bigger so the text fits.
Ambroos
It's probably just the fact that Meiryo is smaller or larger in some spaces for the same amount of points used; so some things just wouldn't fit anymore/get bigger, ... Which is a perfectly fine reason to keep using MS Mincho for me.
