Dirk
So I install the RC last night and it went ok. I'm pretty sure my DVD drive is about to die so I had to open and close it about 14 times to get through the install process so I don't think that is Windows fault. Now the questions I do have are this: 1. Is there anyway to get rid of the thumbnail preview of stuff on the superbar? 2. Is there anyway to get rid of the preview thing for movies files? Like avi files show you like the first frame or what not of the video. 3. What is the direct file to open the sound options? So you can change between headphones and speakers. On Vista it was control mmsys.cpl. That doesn't work in 7 though. 4. On the superbar on the bottom left where I have like Firefox, Thunderbird and stuff like that when I open that program it takes it's place and moves the other ones down. Is there anyway to change that? Like basically use though buttons as a quick launch and have the windows go to the right of the other icons? That is pretty much all I can think of now. Thanks for the help ahead of time.
hdood
1. There is a policy in Local Computer Policy->User Configuration-Administrative Templates->Start Menu and Taskbar to disable thumbnails, but I'm not sure if it actually works or if it's just left over from Vista. You could try enabling it and restarting. 2. What do you mean by preview thing? Do you mean the thumbnail or the preview pane on the right side of Explorer? The latter is easily disabled from Organize->Layout. 3. Open the "Hardware and Sound" control panel and simply drag the green "Sound" text onto the desktop. It'll create a shortcut. 4. No, but you can just not pin anything and right click on the taskbar and go to Toolbars->new toolbar and then just put your launcher icons in that. For 2: I'm actually talking about on the icon itself. For 3: That is good but it won't let me add that to one of my buttons on my G15. That is why I need the direct thing. Like that you would type into Start>Run.
hdood
I see. There's no simple way to disable it just for video files (but you can disable it for everything), but you might be able to download ShellExView and find and disable the shell extension responsible for the video thumbnails. The control panel is still called the same, so "control mmsys.cpl" should work. Edit: Oh.. If you were asking how to GET thumbnails rather than get rid of them, you will need to get thumbnail handlers for the specific video formats. Often they're bundled with the codec. If you're running x64, you'd need the 64-bit versions and those tend to be rare. Edited May 6, 2009 by hdood
UncleSpellbinder
For 2: I'm actually talking about on the icon itself. Are you talking about the difference between these two...

Yes that worked I am an idiot. Also for Number 1 I cannot for the life of me find where that is. Also Spell that is exactly what I am talking about. Another thing I have noticed is that WMP does not remember the size of itself when I open different video files even though I turned on that option. Hmmm. Pikey
You can turn of thumbnails via the the 'Visual Effects' tab in the 'Performance Options' dialogs .. get to it via Control Panel >> All Control Panel Items >> System >> Advanced System Settings >> Doubtless there's a better shortcut to it that I don't know about .. ;)
hdood
Well, if you don't mind losing ALL thumbnails, you can just tick this:
Dirk
Nice thank you both very much. Anyone found a way to get rid of the previews of the windows when you hover over them on the superbar yet? Also does anyone else have the problem with WMP that it won't remember it's size every time you close and reopen it?
