Cloud Constructors
Is it worth buying a gaming PC if you own a PS3 already? sold the xbox360, but I got a nice setup for the ps3 including a 120hz hdtv and surround sound. Wondering if it is worth buying a gaming PC for the likes of left 4 dead, crysis, cod, etc BTW, I do prefer the mac as the OS tho
+longgonebn Subscriber² Posted May 7, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted May 7, 2009 Well if you were asking, but replaced PS3 with the 360, i might of said no it's not worth it. But the PS3 does not have as many games as the 360/PC. If games is what you want.
Cloud Constructors
I also wanted to note the only PC game I play the most is Left 4 Dead but I couldn't play that decent resolutions with high settings on the nvidia 9400m when I had the 24" imac

svnO.o
I'd say it isn't worth buying a gaming PC but it is certainly worth building one as building your own will save you a lot of money. Plus you get to learn something if you've never built your own computer before. You can build a solid gaming PC for ~$450 (not including OS) that will play any game you want at decent resolution. PricklyPoo
Well I have been both a PC gamer and console gamer for a long time, owned practically every console since Super Nintendo at one point or another, and I can say that I definitely prefer pc gaming. I recently bought a 360 and was pretty disappointed with it, pretty much every aspect actually. I have gotten all of my friends who had consoles to get PCs now and we are loving it. Everything is just so much better. The only thing consoles have over PCs is a bigger selection of games imo. There is really no competition between a mouse and a keyboard, besides I'm into the fast paced types of games (UT2004, Warsow, quake, nexuiz, etc). And just having a server browser in online games is 10x better than with a 360 and "matchmaking" The games look twice as good on pc, much higher resolution, games like Crysis, etc. Mods for one thing.... Honestly though, the main reason I'd say get a PC is if you plan on actually using your computer for browsing the web, etc as well. One of the things I can't stand about my Xbox is I usually play one game, browse the net, play a game, mess around with other stuff. But with a console you are stuck....playing games (yes I know wii and ps3 have a server browser, but meh), and everything costs money in Xbox Live, biggest ripoff ever imho. Oh and by the time I got an xbox, payed for live service, got an hd cable to hook up to my monitor, got adapters to hook up my pc surround sound, payed for arcade games to play that are free on the pc, I could have just bought a cheap gaming computer. It really depends on what type of games you want to play though, if you want to stick with slow fps games, sports games, etc then you might as well just stick with a console. Well said, I also thought 360 was a rip off. PS3 is a great console to me, makes a great media player/gaming hub - people complain for its lack of games but ps3 is really all about its exclusives i may just buy a pc soon with an ATI Radeon 4850, still deciding though....not sure if it will be worht hte investment you still play UT2004? :p
goji
With current prices, the 360 isn't an overt ripoff, but with Live, I can agree, slightly. For 200 dollars, you can have a great time playing games on the 360. Of course it will never do what a PC can, but even then as another posted linked to, you can build a great gaming PC for 5-600. I'd stay away from any prebuilt "gaming" PC; they will rip you off.
PricklyPoo
you still play UT2004?:p Ya :p I just can't let the old fast paced games go. :( But if I had to do it over again, and if I was forced to buy a console, I'd definitely buy a ps3. Everything about the Xbox is such a ripoff is honestly ****es me off. For example when I hooked up my xbox to my monitor, I had to use both the hdmi and normal xbox video / audio port in the back, seems simple right? Well....microsoft purposely made the end of the audio/video cable that plugs into the xbox twice as fat as it really needs to be, so you'd have to buy their extra $50 cable just for the audio. The end of the fat cable was just an empty plastic block when I cut it off with a dremel, its only purpose was covering up the hdmi port.
Cloud Constructors
yeah but you can remove that dongle that blocks the hdmi port but u have to slice it open its so rediculous lol ya ps3 rocks, alot of exclusives coming out for it that pc won't get
S00N3R FR3AK
Hmmm Id say yes. I enjoy both my PC and 360 and after getting L4D this weekend realised how much I love a controller. Its good to have both as you can get games for both and IMO if I had the cash Id pick up a PS3 too for games like GoW, MGS, and Infamous as I rather play great games then pick sides. So really I say get all 3 lol. Also I don't know about PS3 online is but I seem to get a lot less lag on live then on the PC.
Yusuf M. Veteran Posted May 7, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 7, 2009 In your situation, it would be a complete waste of money. You already have a good gaming setup with your PS3 and 120 Hz HDTV. Spending money on a gaming PC seems like a waste. As you said yourself, you prefer the Mac OS X operating system. If I were you I'd stick with my PS3 and save that extra money for a gaming PC two years down the road.
DanManIt
If you already have a console its not worth it to get a gaming pc as well
Cloud Constructors
true I already invested in a hdtv and 5.1 and a ps3 but it wouldn't hurt to have a console as well
DirtyLarry Veteran Posted May 8, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 8, 2009 If you already have a console its not worth it to get a gaming pc as well Might not be worth it, but it does provide a completely different experience. And here is a good case where the PC excels... I have been playing the Wolverine game on my PC. I would not dare use the mouse and keyboard, as it is a game meant to be played with a controller. So I am using my wired XBox 360 controller to play it. Thing is, I am running it at 1900x1280, I am also forcing AA and AF both at literally the highest settings they can be (along with some other things like V Sync) through my Nvidia Drivers Control Panel, and the game looks pretty damn great when I sit in my seat away from my 24" Monitor (although be honest I am not sure if the AA and AF is even making a difference). It also runs at a fluid 60 FPS (verified by FRAPS) so simply put I am pretty much playing the same game as I would on my 360 but it looks and runs that much nicer. I am assuming this will be the case for most console games being released nowadays that are also released on the PC. Thing is like I said, would not want to play them with a Keyboard and Mouse, I tried it with Wolverine and it was atrocious, but these games are cheaper as well, so it provides a nice alternative to console gaming. Also I was out of the PC gaming game for awhile, so I am catching up on some games I did not get a chance to check out, mainly Crysis and Fallout, and they booth look and run amazing as well. So my thoughts are if you can afford one, it is always nice to have, as you also have a new computer to do everyday things on, but if it would really set you back, then yes, a console is more than fine. TEX4S
Yeah - a PowerMac can get as crazy expensive as a nice gaming pc. Whether or not it is "worth it" is something only you can answer. Everyone can throw in their 2 cents of whether or not its worth it to them - but that doesnt tell you anything really. Only you know your likes/dislikes and most importantly, your financial situation - as everything is relative. If you have a limited budget - maybe not worth it. If money isnt an issue - well then why not do it ? only you can answer this though.

If you intend on just getting a PC for gaming for those games then don't spend too much. The Radeon HD 4770 would be perfect for you. No need for some of those crazy SLI or Crossfire setups like some people run.
deletedxyz
If you have the money, then build a $500 budget gaming PC. It can easily play GTA IV at 1920x1200 very high settings. I'm speaking form experience.
cork1958
To me personally, no. Gaming on a computer, in my opinion, just doesn't make any sense at all, especially if you already have a console.

Raa
alot of exclusives coming out for it that pc won't get Which is the thing that ****es me off the most. PC was the pioneer in gaming, and now it's basically getting shunned for console DLC. Talk about a big slap in the face for PC gamers. ... And no, I don't own (or plan to own) a console. PC Gaming is a hands down winner IMO. The PS3 as a media/gaming hub? C'mon. I've got a decent (but cheap) PC in the lounge that serves for all of that hooked to a Sony Bravia. It's perfect, heck it even passes the "mum" test :p
Sikh
Ya :pI just can't let the old fast paced games go. :( But if I had to do it over again, and if I was forced to buy a console, I'd definitely buy a ps3. Thats was there soul intent. You guys can sit here and bitch all you want about how they added the extra block to cover the HDMI port but the TRUTH IS, they did it becuase they knew, if your connecting a HDMI cable, you dont need the top cable plugged in. Since HDMI carry sound they ASSUMED everyone using HDMI is connecting to a tv. For PC they made the VGA cable for a reason. Im sick and tired of people bitching about microsoft when its STUPID NONSENSE. I HATE microsoft with a passion for some of the thigns they do, but this was not there intent. After, they realized "omfg some people might go hdmi to monitors becuase they think vga is bad, so they made the option "5.1 surround sound optical hdmi hook up". BIG DEAL. Get over it. I use a VGA cable and I have Turtle Beach Headphones, so that connects into the RCA jacks, if not, my monitor has speaks and they include a RCA to 3.5mm Jack. Works perfect too. Btw, the VGA cable does 1080.
