Randolph
Well. This is my first time trying out the Windows 7 OS. I normally try everything out pre-alpha stage and such...but yeah. Just wondering something. Can I make a new partition for Windows 7 so I can keep my existing one with XP on it aka Dual Boot, and just virtual drive install Windows 7 from the XP Partition onto the new partition? I mean I don't have a DVD-RW drive in my computer. My ma has one in her laptop but.....I like trying different things. :) Thanks. (Y)
Gary2MBz
I believe you can do that. What you can do to create the partition is to open Disk Management by going to Start > Run > type in w/out quotes "diskmgmt.msc" and hit enter. This is to create your new partition. Right Click on the C:\ drive partition and choose "shrink partition". Give it a size of at least 20GB or anything above it to be installed. That was to create the partition, now to go on to the install. To install it, mount the ISO to a virtual disc drive and run the installer like normal. When it asks which partition to install to, choose the new partition you created earlier with the Disk Management utility. Once you do that, you can leave it to install and it will automatically set up the dual boot for you. It will make Windows 7 load by default after a 30 second delay without a keyboard response but you can change that through Windows 7's MSconfig utility. I don't recommend using XP's MSconfig for integrity reasons. You can adjust the amount of processors and amount of RAM available as well as the 30 second delay can be changed to anything as long as it is 3 seconds. It will also let you choose to make XP the default to start or you can leave it to 7 as default. Feel free to leave any questions about the process.
