best media codec pack?

Recommended Posts

I installed the aforementioned Sharky codec pack last night on Win7. Works brilliantly. Plays everything in both WMP and MPC, including FLV. Get full thumbnails as well. Recommended.

I use Windows 7 x64 and I installed k-l*te codec pack 64bit and the lastest MPC-HC svn, also the 64bit version.

Hardware accelleration works great with x264 1080p files. (CPU use of 3-5%).

-snipped-

If that's the 7 version of the Vista codec pack, I don't think we're allowed to mention it here, Since I think it contains one of those alternatives.

Why would you install a codec pack when MPC-HC has a built-in decoder based on FFMpeg?

BEcause MPC-HC is crap, and maybe he like me uses MediaPortal or similar for all his media needs.

No, MPC-HC is not crap. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it crap.

And thanks for the tip on MediaPortal. Never heard of it. Googled for it and

it looks pretty interesting. I'll have to investigate further.

Windows 7 x86 + MPC-HC x86 = plays everything but RealMedia, and who cares about that crap anyway... (oh, yeah, I know, the anime community, bleh)

Windows 7 x64 + MPC-HC x64 = plays everything but RealMedia, and... oh I already said that.

But seriously, Windows 7 and the matching MPC-HC = playback of effectively everything that matters, including mkv files, h/x264 content with subs (embedded or separate), etc. And QuickTime also. If you simply must have RealMedia support, use RealAlternative and nothing else, then you'll be looking at effectively 100% compatibility and playback capability with Windows 7 + MPC-HC matched.

I really don't understand why some folks just can't break those habits and stop using the damned codec pack crap. Installing nearly ANYTHING on Windows 7 will break it, especially the crappy codec packs (and all of 'em are crappy now that Windows 7 supports nearly every format available), and the only way to get things correct again is basically a complete reinstall of the OS.

Codec packs are soo... soooo... antiquated now... move on, people.

<snipped> codecs + 64bit components ( so i can have subtitles on WMC and WMP12 ) , thats the only reason i use codecs - the subtitles , cos win7 dont support it

I don't use them myself but <snipped> codecs were designed not to touch any of the internal codecs or change any file associations for them - so they are pretty safe to use, install and uninstall.
