Setting file type association issues?

Recommended Posts

Is anyone having any problems using associating file types with certain programs?

The two programs I'm having issues with are vlc and 7-zip.

If I go into the options in either of the programs and set what files I want them to open when I get back into explorer the associations have been forgotten.

The only way I can get them to stick is to right click on the file type in question, select open with and set the program that way.

There are only two programs that I use regularly that remember their associations when set, those are foobar (which seem to open the control panel to set the assocations) and uTorrent.

Am I the only one having these issues?

What versions?

If you want I can check them out... I've sent a handful of suggestions/fixes VLC's way over time. Did this work correctly in Vista? Apps that are using XP-style associations probably would want to update their code. When you do not run as administrator (UAC) setting HKLM associations in your app won't work.

Yes that's what I noticed when I first installed 7-Zip x64, I select all file types (except cab and zip), clicked apply and ok... 7z file icon never changed, went back to 7-Zip options, no file types were selected, but right-click context menu still works so I don't really mind this glitch, I'm thinking it may get fixed later.

vlc version 0.9.9 (I think? The version on the current download page) and version 9.0.3 of 7-zip.

@zachdms If I run them as admin I should be able to set associations and have them stick?

It should, assuming they're using XP-style association logic. But every other Vista/Windows 7 user probably would appreciate them being updated. =\

:hmmm: , worked for 7-zip but not for vlc :/

Ah well, guess programs will get updated eventually to work properly with 7

Thanks... For others using 7-Zip, after you install it, right-click its shortcut in the Start menu, 'Run as administrator", then configure your 7-Zip options and file types, you should now get the proper file icons/associations.

OK, I put up a post over at the VLC forums here:

* http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=59260

which covers how they can at least plug into the Default Programs tools pretty easily. It should be pretty simple on their part. This is kind of a revisit of a post I made there last August, but does update with the OpenWith keys and their new file types. :)

Does 7-Zip plug in to Default Programs at least... ? I hain't used it but can check that out if of value.

OK, I installed 7-zip and the associations seemed to work fine on my Windows 7 RC system. I'm not sure what problem people had there, but at this point I can't reproduce it myself.

I installed the 64-bit version of 7-Zip 4.65 on a normal user account, and the file types in the program's options wouldn't stick, and the file icons wouldn't change. But, it all worked as normal when 7-Zip was run as Administrator, file types selected would stay selected, and file icons would change to 7-Zip icons. I'm suspecting the Win7 RC is a little more restrictive, to prevent third-party apps from "hijacking" associations.

Yeah, that should be a preexisting bug in 7-zip that would have bitten them on Windows XP for non-admins too. You should probably report that as a bug: applications that assume the user is always admin are broken. :)
