ToneKnee
So I've just installed opposing forces since my brother said it was a good expansion. so I started up the game so excited about it and so on. Greeted with some stupid login window that I need an online account to be able to play etc. No problem, my brother said he has an account already, so I used his. Once logged in, I was asked to download a patch, and I clicked the button to download it, waited, waited, got it, installed. Started up the game, asking for another patch, and I Was like "Okay then...", clicked that download. Did the same thing again, asked for another patch. I am now downloading the 7th patch as we speak and I'm aware that it's now downloading 3 more patches. I mean, wtf THQ, you make a quality game but forgot to make a decent patching system? Why not pick up what version I had, then install 1 big update and none of this ****ing about? So angry.

Sethos
Glad I have the steam version, never have to update, just smile and start the game :) Edited May 9, 2009 by Sethos
Yusuf M. Veteran Posted May 9, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 9, 2009 And that's why I prefer buying games on Steam. It's so easy to just launch the game and watch it auto-update. However, I've yet to come across a game with a patching system like that (except for World of Warcraft). I usually go to FileFront.com or GamersHell.com to download my game patches. Usually, you'll find a version that contains all the fixes and updates of all previous patches.

Yusuf M. Veteran Posted May 9, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 9, 2009 You'd think that the built-in update system would just go straight for the latest version, wouldn't you? Not necessarily. A lot of games require multiple patches. Simply downloading and installing the latest version without any previous patches wouldn't work. I'd expect it to download the first "big" patch then the next "big" patch. For example, say game X has patches v1.0, v1.1, v1.2, and v1.3. Instead of downloading each one I could simply download v1.3 which contains all the fixes from v1.0 - v1.3. I'm surprised though. The game has a lot of patches ranging from 5 MB to 100 MB. You'd think they would at least combine all the previous patches into one big file with the exception of the final patch which weighs in at 1.38 GB.
