Artificial Glare on Superbar

Recommended Posts

Totally a cosmetic issue. When I downloaded the beta back in January, I thought the superbar was freaking awesome(it still is), and loved how it blended in with the wallpaper. It was transparent. Now, they have this artificial glare on tabs that are open in the RC, in the beta they were transparent with a hint of glare. I was wondering if there was any way of customizing it to reduce the glare. I've attached a pic to show what i mean. The Beta is on top, RC on bottom:

First off, thanks for posting about this, if you hadn't, I wouldn't have known about this feature.

Secondly, it is possible to enable transparency on the taskbar, here's how you do it.

Desktop -> Right Click -> Personalize -> Select Window Color option -> Check "Enable Transparency" Option

I agree that it should be toned down a little, but I think they felt that the appearance of running applications wasn't distinct enough when the buttons are set to only show icons. When you have labels on, that issue goes away and the glare just feels excessive.

I don't think there is any way of changing it, short of hacking the shell DLL files.

Maybe they need to change it but only for people who have labels then?

I don't have labels shown on the taskbar and it looks fantastic. I thought it was okay in the beta build as I could still easily tell what was running, but in the release candidate it just looks much more polished and even looks better to me.

Again, that is without labels on though. It may not look good for people who use labels...

Thanks for responding, but I've got those checked. My settings are the same for both beta and RC, but they've upped the glare in the RC. I think hdood is right, they did it to make it easier to make out the differences between active programs and inactive ones. Still makes my eyes drift to the bottom and interesting, hacking dll files. I've added visual styles before, but never modified them. I still hope somebody has got an idea. Thanks.

I'm hoping they dial it back to beta levels for the RTM. Labels or not (especially not since the bare is thicker) the new glare is horrible, way to pronounced making everything a light gray crap. it runs the colors too. It was more than easy enough to see what apps where running with the beta frame and highlight

Oh I just realized that you were talking about the GLARE on the transparent taskbar! Whoops! I'm sure there will be some tweak util out once 7 is released to set the glare levels. But it seems pretty okay to me, looks good.

Couldn't I just lift the visual style from the beta and add it the resources folder in windows? They would be microsoft visual styles, so no need to patch(an assumption). I think that would solve my issue.

I don't really mind though. It's not a huge problem

YESSSSSSSS!!!! I DID IT!!!! took me a couple days and researching the net, but i freaking did it. All i had to do was replace 4 .png images in the msstyle. just 4!! yes, I'm a noob at this, but hell, I'm happy. I'll explain it here to other noobs if they like, but that'll have to wait till tomorrow.

Thanks for posting about this.

I'm not too fond of the glare myself, either (I don't have transparency on, it just bugs me either way).

Inactive and active programs look far too similar for my liking.

Would it be possible to post edited .msstyle file, or wouldn't Microsoft like that? I'm not entirely sure on the legal stand on doing this, considering it's an official theme and all.

I basically had to edit the aero.msstyle file. I took 4 png files from the beta .msstyle and place them in the correct spots in the RC .msstyle. I don't if I have permission to post my method on here, but if you wanna know more, just PM me, and i'll gladly my method. The improved taskbar below in 7100:
