Getting a job at an apple store?

Recommended Posts

hey guys, thanks for all the replies.

Turns out, I got lucky, graduated with a 1st class degree from university and have gone straight into a web development job :)

I'll be buying a macbook pro with this months pay.

Looks like all that hard work I've put in over the last 3 years is paying off! ;)

Awesome to hear that, I would love to try out a web development job myself! As for the dude wanting that Apple retail job, good luck! I don't think it's that hard to get. It's only the "uniform" that seems fashionable, and admittedly I'll take wearing jeans and a black t-shirt over wearing a blue polo shirt and khaki pants ANY day of the week. If you're able to lay the impression that you'd do a good job selling (or fixing) Macs while keeping the customer satisfied, you're fine.

Hah, I have an interview at one of their hiring seminars tomorrow morning at 9am. I wonder how they'll deal with someone who likes both macs and PCs. I'm a film editor though, so it will be interesting to see which position they put me in. If they put me in sales, that would seem like a waste of my talents.

We shall see...

I've been called back for an interview next Friday for the new Cardiff Store. I'm not sure how much I'm allowed to say, so I won't say anything more. :p

Unless you signed a NDA don't really think their are any limits on what you could say.

OT

To work as a tech at a apple store first get apple certfied and just because it looks nice get any other basic certs such as A+.

Didn't even know they were opening a store in Cardiff. I'm assuming its going to be in the new St Davids 2 complex?

(Former employee here!) Random thoughts on working at an Apple Store.

Before the iPod and iPhone became the top sellers at an Apple Store, Apple retail did place a premium on product knowledge versus sales ability. However, that has definitely shifted in recent years as so many more people are interested in just buying a new iPhone case or a replacement power cable. I would try to avoid those customers and focus on those who were really interested in the product and really wanted to know what it could do for them.

I still would highly recommend working at an Apple Store - while it's still retail and still can be a grind, it's definitely better than virtually any other retail environment. It also highly depends on what kind of store you are working in. I worked in a tiny but highly trafficked store so it would definitely get a bit claustrophobic at times. But most of the stores have a decent enough layout now so that shouldn't be too much of a problem anymore.

While they may not hire based totally based on product knowledge, it will definitely make your Apple retail experience much more pleasant. My store we had people with their relative areas of expertise - video, OS X, web development, etc. and it's nice to be that guy that can be pulled in to answer questions. Knowing what you are talking about also means that you get to handle the customers that know what THEY are talking about - it's about 1000x more fun to sell a Mac to someone who knows about Macs as opposed to having explain that Microsoft Office works. Being able to fix minor Apple problems - resetting iPods and iPhones, reloading iPod software, installing updates will also help you in the long run as it takes some pressure off of the genius bar, who these days always need all the help they can get.

Definitely wished I had worked at an Apple store when the iPod was first becoming big - all the employees got free ones whenever they were released!

(And final tip - to sell a Mac demo Expose - I closed about half of my sales from just that one demo!)

Yup, we all had to sign an NDA.

Yup, I have a feeling its where the old Mothercare used to be only because its the only place that is boarded up during development.

On a separate note. I don't think I've got a job at the Store. I've heard from other candidates that have been offered jobs but not me. :(
