Satellite Internet

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Get either freeserve or virgin, as an isp only ?13ish per month, for 64k

You can leave it on all day everyday and they don't moan about using up too many hours. 2 hr disconnection on virgin but reconnection is instant.

You can connect to the ISDN box using a USB cable as BT changed the boxes, the ping times are quite a bit slower.

But i would recomend getting a terminal adaptor or a router from ebay, both very cheap now as people jack in the equipment for asdl.

Also if your equipment supports it if you are using 2 lines (128k) one line gets dropped when an incomming call is comming.

I was considering a satalite service to completment my ISDN for faster downloading, but I might just get a seccond account for the the ISDN.

Very Wrong freeserve dont allow that anymore they limit your hours.. Or if you ignore they will terminate your account like mine:pp and i dont know what your on about with the USB cable you just put a ISDN card in your machine like a Modem and it has a wire like a Network one. :pinch::

Jesus, there's lot's of misinformed crap getting posted here. About the only thing accurate was that satellite access does suffer from pretty bad lag, so gaming is out. I don't game online anyway, so it makes no difference.

Silvermead's service is tops. It outranks any other satellite provider in Europe at the moment. You'll get maxed out speeds with each package, and every single one of them offers better download speeds than even their fastest ADSL equivalent. The only thing which is/was bad about silvermead was their customer support, and I'm pleased to announce that it's now very much on the mend after they got themselves a new call centre.

They'll soon (next week probably) be launching their new transponder on the UK beam of Eurobird, which will mean a signal strength similar to Sky Digital (as opposed to the 20-30% we used to get). If you have a good sky digital installation, and you check the signal strength through the box and find it's above 75%, you're sorted. Even in bad weather. By bad weather I mean rain and possible thunder (although I wouldn't recommend having anything plugged in during a storm anyway) but heavy snow is out of the question.

As for 2-way satellite being better, crap also. The only advantage is having a speedier uplink, and by speedier I mean it can transfer more data than ISDN. Lag is doubled with 2-way satellite as the data has to get bounced back _and_ forth.

With silvermead, you can use you're own equipment which can be procured relatively cheaply through eBay. A DIY install is actually not all that difficult. I did it myself and I had no previous knowledge of satellite equipment or installs.

What you'll need is the following:

1) A quad LNB. This'll allow up to four feeds from the one dish; one for internet data, the other for digital TV. ?30-40

2) A DVB card. Technisat?s "Skystar 2" is the one in use by most people on the service. Check Silvermead?s forums for more supported cards. ?50-60

3) CT-100 digital capable coaxial cable. ?20 for 100m

4) A little tinkering to get software set up. The silvermead service works through a socks proxy. Most apps are capable of using this; P2P apps such as Kazaa and IM clients such as Trillian all work wonderfully.

The download speeds with silvermead are blistering. Get it, you won't be disappointed. Don't let these misinformed nay-sayer's tell you any different ;-)

Why did you just bring a topic thats been dead for awhile now alive, you idiot...... my god

Is there some rule stated somewhere which forbids me from doing so?

I was giving an intelligent reply to an unintelligent uninformed thread. Your nickname betrays you.

Ok, a few things here....

Intelligen: Because what Nuphor posted was pertinant, informative information. Maybe someone else who is considering Satellite will read this thread and become much more informed by his post you idoit.... my god. Think before you flame.

Secondly, just about everything Nuphor mentioned was correct. I work for Hughes Network Systems here in the state for their DirecPC and DirecWay satellite internet services. (DirecPC being 1 way and DirecWay being 2 way). Ping times are outrageous for 2 way, but 1 was isnt too bad, but still not perfict. The weather issue is a bit exagerated. Will a small rainstorm interupt your internet service? If the dish is pointed properly, then no. If there is an unbelievable wrath-of-god severe storm heading your way, most likely your service will be interupted.

Another thing, the 2-way service still has lots of bugs...the 1-way system works almost flawlessely.

Any other questions? Post or PM me!
