08993
I'm praying that they have killed it off! You could always use a trippy wallpaper and take some LSD, much kinder on system resources.

Owen W Veteran Posted May 11, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 11, 2009 They have desktop slideshows now, I don't think it will be brought back. I don't see it being revived either. Ultimate extras no longer exist, also, and it just drains performance terribly having a video running and looping.
VMIT
You can just use This.
Island Dog
DeskScapes will be updated to fully support Windows 7. :)
ToneKnee
I'd like to see it return, but more of a standard feature and with proper hardware acceleration (would be a lot easier on systems that support it.).
O.G
Slideshow replaced Dreamscene so there won't be any Dreamescene in 7 unless there's a workaround for the RTM or you use a 3rd party app. I did read somewhere a while back that MS removed it due to the performance impact it had. A non argument really as it was automatialy disabled for fullscreen apps and some others and could be turned off an on via the context menu. hjf288
Err with MPEG 2 GPU assisted decoding, it used barely ANY resources and it was disabled during gaming so it didnt impact..
Joni_78
There is Dreamscene build 6801 for Windows 7. Vista x86/x64 Dreamscene also works in Windows 7.

Well, IMO (<- the important bit) because it sucked, it was horrible on system resources, if you used it on a laptop it drained your battery, the whole point of it was dubious, it was distracting and it inflated associated service footprints such as DWM. And for what? An animated gif as wallpaper? Yeah great!

Dreamscene only used a shedload of system resources if you had a graphics card incapable of MPEG2 Decoding acceleration... Otherwise it barely used system resources.. An animated gif as wallpaper? Yeah great! That wasn't an answer to his question. See, that's an answer to "Why wouldn't you personally use Dreamscene?". Frankly, I agree with you. I tried out the whole animated desktops thing, decided I wasn't too fond of it, and disabled it. However, just because I won't *personally* use it, is no reason for Microsoft to remove it from the OS. Regardless of our opinion, there are plenty of people who DO like it. Therefore, it should be included. The default wallpaper that ships with Windows 7 should be static. Between this and the Sidebar, it seems that MS has removed as many features as they've added to Windows 7.
DiEMOS
Dreamscene had potential, but it never got popular, don't expect for it making a great comeback.

The sidebar was nothing more than a "dock" for desktop gadgets, which are still there and can still be docked to the screen edge. IIRC Slideshow is not enabled by default, so the wallpaper is static. Even if it is enabled by default it set to every 30 minutes by default and can be turned off quite easily.
delt31
Dreamscene build 6801 - will that work on RC? Any help on getting dreamscene for win 7? I would love to have it again. I had it for vista. Update - found a link for dreamscene on Win 7 however I have not tried it. My RC has been working so well- not sure I want to mess anything up! anyone try this yet? Oh, I never said the desktop wasn't static by default. I'm just saying that Dreamscene should be included, just the default wallpaper that shows when you first install should not be a Dreamscene wallpaper. And the Sidebar's more than just a dock. The functionality of the Sidebar HAS been removed from Windows 7 for no good reason. For instance, the gadgets no longer automatically space themselves like they could with the Sidebar. Most importantly, though, the new gadget model cannot reserve a portion of screen space for gadgets when a window is maximized. I'm sure this is a real pain for the users who got used to this in Vista. However, I digress. This conversation is about Dreamscene, not the Sidebar. Once again, I feel that Windows 7 is two steps forward, one step back. It's an improvement, sure, but it's not the "miracle OS" than many of the fans claim it to be. -KJ
Maybe a looping waterfall or creek Dreamscene would be cool, otherwise I think I would find it too distracting.

It works perfectly. All it does is modify a couple of bits in the binary like was done with the Vista screensavers and other bits to allow them to work with XP.
