Shivek
OK, so usually when I install ATI driver in XP or Vista, I have to restart my PC. When I installed the Windows 7 drivers for ATI in it, it didn't restart but the installation did finish. Is it supposed to be like that or did you guys have to restart? Also converting audio from FLAC using dbpoweramp would be same as it was in XP right? I won't have messed up audios?
tsutton
If you use the full ATI package, you usually have to restart. But if you used the basic driver, you don't need to restart.
warwon
It was strange I did the full 45Mb install. I was able to load the ati catalyst manager which pointed to the correct version. Maybe it's not fully loaded, but it sure appeared to be. Odd.
Ci7
it is due WDDM 1.1 effect
SkyDX
I never had to restart on Vista or 7 whenever I installed the full ATI package, everything always worked right out of the box, in Vista anyways.
Digitalx
Windows 7 doesn't need restart as it was one of the things they were touting was less restarts. The driver refreshes on install without needing to reboot so it's nice and easy process. As above it's an improvement which has come through WDDM 1.
piehouserat
One of the things Microsoft has been trying to do since XP is reduce the amount of restarts the user has to perform. Thanks to the updated driver model found in Vista and subsequent versions, restarting after driver installations is not required as much as before. I still have to restart after my nvidia driver installations though.
iZoom
While the wife has Ati and is still on XP, I do enjoy the less restarts with 7. After getting everything set up and customized, it does feel better with only a couple reboots to update the system files. As opposed to a restarted every 10 minutes after applying just a few updates :)
Reacon
When recently upgrading to Catalyst 9.4, I noticed it did not prompt me to restart and continued working as normal. Least I'm not alone.
giantpotato
It's not windows 7, it's the ATi drivers. A few months ago ATi redesigned the installer so it doesn't need a restart at the end. I noticed it in one of the changelogs. This was probably around driver 9.1 or so.
ViperAFK
Technically with wddm 1.1 a driver doesn't need to restart to install correctly.
Pupik
Can't understand how this is news. You don't need to restart after installing ATI's drivers since they started to use .NET, like [almost] two years ago.
ToneKnee
If it's the first time installation (you've had like a generic display driver installed), you do need to restart, but, when doing future driver updates, you don't need to restart. I've always hit cancel when it's asks and started up the Catalyst Control Panel straight away without any problems.
tonyunreal
It's been like that since vista.
Argi
It's been like that since vista. QFT. Technically you've never had to restart after installing video drivers in Vista either, you could go straight into a game and be fine. The reason that Nvidia/ATI ask you to restart is so that all the services/otherjunk they installed during setup can be started.

Actually, this goes back to NT 4.0 (specifically, Jim Allchin) when he took command of the Business Operating Systems (which was responsible for NT-based operating systems at the time) Division; he wanted the unnecessary reboots booted); notice how there are FAR fewer driver-related reboots in 7 than any other version of Windows (in fact, only hard drives and audio devices, and not even all of those, require a reboot in 7 today post-install).
