swiftflo
Have installed Win 7 with no problems, as for working still no problems. However I have noticed if I go to "Computer" it only shows C, D, and DVD/Cd drives, no USB ports, these do show up in Device manager & Computer Management. If I plug something into one of the USB ports or card reader then that port shows up. Strange, anyone else have this problem, or is it a problem ?. FunkTrooper
Windows has always been like this. What OS have you been using where it's any different?
Rudy
never seen an OS that behaves the way you described it. There's no point showing USB ports in my computer
Pablo2008jedi
My Vista PC always showed my card reader ports, even with nothing in them. Now on Windows 7 RC the drive is mapped when I insert a card. I prefer it this way ;D
GusValentine
Control Panel, Folder Options, View tab, uncheck Hide empty drives in the Computer folder, Apply... USB drives not ports :)
Colin-uk Veteran Posted May 11, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 11, 2009 if you have a built in card reader sometimes it will list all the empty slots as available drives, meaning you get like another 6-10 drive letters showing up in my computer. this doesnt happen with plug in usb card readers afaik. Admiral Michael
I use USB Safely Remove to do that on my desktop in Windows XP. I think that's how it should be done.
-Kurisu-
That's normal USB drives don't show up unless you plug something in.
swiftflo
Control Panel, Folder Options, View tab, uncheck Hide empty drives in the Computer folder, Apply...USB drives not ports :) Thanks that was the answer. dr_crabman
Thanks that was the answer. They alway's showed up in Vista so what system the other guys are using I don't know. lol Well, you meant "usb drives/slots" but wrote "usb ports". That's where the confusion came from. And it's a "feature" in Win7 that empty card-reader-slots are hidden (a good one imo).
ozgeek
I have a card reader with like 10 ports (esata, firewire, card slots, usb ports). The card slots shows up in Computer even if there is nothing inserted. It is only that if I plug in a usb drive or external hard drive, that it will appear in Computer. Admiral Michael
It can depend on the reader. My Dell Inspiron 6400 has a SD reader that doesn't show up until something is inserted.
