MS Announces Win7 Release by Dec

Recommended Posts

The title for this topic might be a bit misleading. "Holiday availability" suggests Nov, maybe Oct...

The really interesting part of the Windows Team Blog post is that "telemetry" from beta/RC users is a significant factor in determining the launch date...

Acer said October 23, which is in time for the holiday shopping season. Thus, until Microsoft is more specific, I'm going to assume October 23.

They say on the MS team blog RTM in 3 months so we should see RTM late July early August so public release should be around mid to late October. Seems Acers claims of Public release on 23rd of October could be right.

I'm still thinking it'll come out on or near August 24th: the same day Windows 95 came out. What better day to release another Windows "reboot?"

God, I hope they don't do that. Why look to the past?

I have to say, I think that's a great idea! I was at the launch in Seattle back in 95 and the hype was impressive. Almost all newspapers had cover stories and tv shows had footage of everybody in line, etc. Making a connection to that day/event is a great idea.

Until 95, Windows was just "yuck." Windows 95 was the beginning of a new OS and a new direction for Microsoft. I believe Windows 7 is supposed to be the same, so it would make sense to release it the same day as a commemoration. :)

This has been brought up previous and as it was with Vista the hundreds of speculation release dates will continue from late Summer to first of the year. MS track record certainly shows later then on time. It would be really bad if MS doesn't get 7 out before the Christmas holidays, especially with the free upgrade program. That was the case with Vista as well and they F'd that up pretty good. 7 is looking very good so far in its build development.

Yes, Acer seems to have hit the nail on the head with the release date.

As much as I like Windows 7, I don't see how it's revolutionary. In fact, it's the least revolutionary consumer edition of Windows since Windows Me. XP brought NT to consumer desktop, Vista deeply reworked the kernel and UI, but Windows 7? Lots of polishing on Vista, but no real breakthrough.
