Theymademedoit
Hey guys, I'm new here, but I just spent 2 hours trying to get rid of that tooltip of the start menu cause it's really annoying me, ill show you what i mean by uploading a pic Does anyone know how to get rid of it? it would really make the button look better http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/4938/capturezhp.jpg thanks already
Yusuf M. Veteran Posted May 12, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 12, 2009 (edited) I don't know how to get rid of it and I don't see the issue. It only shows up when you hover your cursor over the start button. I certainly don't do that. The only time I bring my cursor near the start button is when I click on it. Anyway, try this: Click Start and type "regedit" in the search bar (without quotations). Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced. From the list, right-click ShowInfoTip and modify the [decimal] value data accordingly (1 - enable, 0 - disable). This isn't guaranteed to work but it's worth a try. Here's a screenshot from Windows Vista: Edited May 12, 2009 by Anaron
Calum Veteran Posted May 12, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 12, 2009 If Anaron's suggestion doesn't work and the tool-tip still annoys you, try hovering right over the far bottom-left side so the cursor is no longer on the screen; that way, you will still be able to see the glow of the button and click on it, but the tool-tip will not be shown :)
cropcircles
No luck. Tried it and rebooted and still shows up.
Orange Battery
lol I remember this was a common complaint among some of the more critical Windows XP beta testers, who also complained there was no way to remove tool tips that hover over minimised windows on the XP task bar. In one discussion session the then head of the MS XP user experience said it would be something that would be looked into for the next version of windows (that would become Vista). I guess it never got there.
Theymademedoit
It is kinda weird that nothing works, I guess it's hidden so well that no one will ever find it. But it's not really crucial , but it just looks better without that annoying message, i mean: duuuh? of course it's start.. well thanks for your help guys...if anyone finds out, let us know :)
Solid Knight
I think there is a way to turn all tool-tips off. Vista has: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\StartButtonBalloonTip though I'm not sure if that is the tool-tip or the first balloon that pops up when you use the start menu for the very first time. dead.cell
Wow, never realized it did that. Why mouse over the start menu for that long though?

-KJ
Why even have a tooltip there.
Ambroos
Why even have a tooltip there. The narrator thing (visually impaired people stuff) reads tooltips out loud. It's Microsoft, and when they do the slightest change that might annoy people using narrator or something else they instantly get killed by the media. Microsoft isn't like Apple for example. Apple is just aiming for the normal customer with OSX, Microsoft aims for really everyone with Windows.

It works for me. Granted, it doesn't turn the tool-tip off, but it stops the tool-tip from showing when you hover over the 'start' button. Isn't that what you'd like? :)
Lord Ba'al
Appoach the Start button slowly from the lower right corner, until it lights up. No tooltip will be shown
Yusuf M. Veteran Posted May 13, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 13, 2009 No luck. Tried it and rebooted and still shows up. I see. You should try Solid Knight's suggestion. Perhaps that'll work. If anything, you could try Calum's suggestion. That seems to be a surefire way of preventing the tooltip from showing up. :)
neo1911
Appoach the Start button slowly from the lower right corner, until it lights up. No tooltip will be shown  It works !!!! Or Keep mouse pointer to extreme bottom left of start button in such a way that its out of screen. Then see the magic
