Buy a Vista Laptop - Free upgrade to 7 ?

Recommended Posts

Apologies if I sound dumb when I ask this, but I havn't been following Windows 7 very closely at all.

I will soon need to buy myself a laptop as I'm off to University in October, hurrah! I've decided to wait as long as possible before I buy it cos' I'm guessing better technology just keeps getting cheaper and cheaper every day.

So if I buy a Laptop around August, September time, not sure if that matters, which has Vista Home Premium, can I then upgrade it to 7 Home Premium when 7 is released, for free?!

And if so what sort of spec. laptop do I need to be looking for to run 7 Home Premium. Typical usage being, browsing, emailing, watching dvds, listening to music yadayada, I might use Photoshop every now and again, but nothing too drasticly demanding, no gaming.

Once again apologies if my questions sound stupid to any of you guys.

Thanks in advance,

Richard.

There's no automatic free updates to Windows 7. The OEM you get the laptop from has to participate in the upgrade program and has to provide you with an upgrade coupon you can use to have Windows 7 mailed to you when it's released.

At least that's how it worked with Vista.

Hmm, how do I go about ensuring that? ... sorry!

They usually state that with a sticker on the laptop or in the aisle if they are eligible for a free upgrade to windows 7. But asking them won't hurt :)

So there is an upgrade program on, because, I have looked online and only really found rumours that anyone purchasing from July 1st to January 1020 can upgrade.

I will probably buy my laptop on amazon or play etc. Is it them who run the program or, the manufacturer of the laptop? :s
