Rearrange icons on the taskbar

Recommended Posts

To rearrange the order of program icons on the taskbar, drag an icon from its current position to a different position on the taskbar. You can rearrange programs as often as you like.
Sounds simple but when I do this, the icon rarely stays where I placed it. Instead it jumps one or two positions away from where I wanted it. What's going on?

Depends on the program.

Something like Windows Update seems to generate both a Control Panel and Windows Explorer icon.

That's not related?

  • All open files from the same program are always grouped together, even if you didn?t open them one after the other. This is so all previews for an open program can be viewed together at the same time.
  • If a program is pinned to the taskbar, the taskbar icon stays in whatever position you dragged it to. If the program isn't pinned to the taskbar, the icon stays in the position you dragged it to until the program is closed.

I have the icons pinned to my taskbar and they're not running. If all the icons are running, they drag properly between eachother.

No rearrange issue here. I am curious if anyone knows why MS didn't include an orient left/center/right option. :/

Center orientation of the icons would be sweet!

Un/locking the taskbar does nothing. I haven't tried to modify anything, I have only changed the provided taskbar appearance properties.

I created a temporary account to see if it acted the same way and after an initial glitch on the first login (pinned items wouldn't appear, context menus froze, icon clipping/disappearing) it worked as expected. The bug that affected my current account has gone for now by unpinning everything and adding them again. It's only a minor bug that is probably rare or fixed.
