veritas310
Can we get a Neowin iPhone app!? I am hooked at looking through Neowin's pages during the day and if there were an iPhone app to carry with me everywhere else, I could tap into the news/forums from anywhere. Anyone else wanna jump on this train? Ironically enough I just finished the survey and realized that I should have listed this! Happy Thursday everyone :). I think the Neowin forums are already formatted for the iPhone.
saxondale.
isn't this pretty much what the mobile version of the site does?
veritas310
Maybe, but doesn't it just seem simpler to throw an app together and be one tap away, rather than popping open the browser and keying to it? I don't know, just thought it would be nice, apparently not many others do lol.
Garry
Not really... That's what Mobile Safari and Bookmarks are for! If you're REALLY lazy, visit neowin.net in Mobile Safari and hit Add to Home Screen.
SuperKid
It be nice to have an app which can retrieve the latest news from the forum and put it to the iphone.

That's what Mobile Safari and Bookmarks are for!If you're REALLY lazy, visit neowin.net in Mobile Safari and hit Add to Home Screen. Exactly, click add to home screen and it will create a bookmark with logo, and the pages are formatted for mobile use.I dont know how exactly you could make an app to browse through the site anybetter than that as its a huge place thats constantly updated, would be far simpler just using the bookmark

veritas310
Yes! :) Good to hear. Thanks everyone, I know there are ways to bookmark pages and add to the homescreen, just like apps that have a bit more functionality than just going to the web, scaling things to fit the iPhone. I have the LinkedIn and Facebook app, I know you can open safari and go to the page, but the app is much nicer to use, as they designed it specifically for the iPhone. Sikh
Wow very nice. I hope this is done by summer :p. Thats when I get my iPhone. @Everyone saying use bookmarks or etc: The point of an App is its designed for just a particular site. So a Neowin app will query neowin like an RSS feed. Show the news and forums. It will just look better imo. So its not like Veritas is lazy. He would just like a "o look neowin app". Tap, open and vallah. Its just smooth and quick and simple. Also, he doesnt NEED to view the full site and tap to zoom in and blah blah(ive been to this site thru my dads iPhone while fun, also a pain with all the zooming in and out). An app would make this easy!

That screenshot just looks like a differently formatted page viewed in safari to me.

Rob Veteran Posted May 16, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 16, 2009 It'll only be a web app - right now there are no decent reasons to make it a native app :p

carmatic
is it going to be like all the graphics are going to be part of the program itself, and the only thing it truly downloads from the internet is text typed by other users?
Electric Jolt
Man, I could've sworn that I was using mobile.neowin.net and it showed me comments on the mobile version, but that was only once and since then it went back to the normal mobile version without comments. This looks nice and all but I hope you guys consider actually making a real app or hiring a team to do so. Webapps suck, well at least apps like appulous do because I have to use that all the time and it sucks with the delay of tapping buttons and scrolling through the pages. Rob Veteran Posted May 18, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 18, 2009 As stated, it will be a web app - there's no compelling reasons to make it a native application - it doesn't warrant the effort.

Electric Jolt
Yes, there is a reason for it. Speed and quick easy access, there could be push functionality implemented. But whatever, as long as this comes out, because I dislike the current Neowin mobile site.

I only wish the whole story was put into the RSS feed and I'd be happy.

If an app with push takes off it can be expensive to maintain because it has to be run by a third party server. You can't just magically say push notifications in phones and tell it what to do and have the phone or apple's servers do it.
