still no multi desk?

Recommended Posts

hey I am playing with windows 7 RC as i am sure you all are... it's cool i have gotten used to the superbar but can't wait to see some skins for it, and the gui changes are all welcome in my book. a few bugs here and there but nothing major...

my disappointment is that there still doesn't seem to be a native multi desktop solution on windows. they gave us powertoys with xp after 2 years and told us to use it with vista as best we can.... I really thought with 7 there would be a native well done multi desktop solution.. am i missing something? is MS not including it cause of all the BS anti trust laws or whatever they are?

or are they planning on it, just not in the RC?

anyone use a good one with 7 RC that they would recommend?

There is no "true" multi-mon support in 7. They do realize that a lot of people have multi-mon (especially internally), so it's high up on the list for Windows 8 I would imagine.

I've read "Ultramon" works in Windows 7 IF you remove the windows buttons, by going into the registry. (A simple fix if you know what you are doing).

Otherwise, there is also something else that apparantly works, but I've not used it. Something fusion or something like that?

It would be a substantial amount of work to add the kind of virtual desktops you ask for.

Windows does actually have support for multiple desktops (the UAC prompt for instance is displayed on another desktop), but the design is such that it makes the usefulness very limited. Windows desktops are isolated from each other so that you can't move programs back and fort between desktops, and programs running on separate desktops can't interact with each other. This also means that each desktop has to run its own copy of Explorer. 'The new window manager doesn't support multiple desktops either, which means you can only have Aero on one desktop. All in all, it's not that useful, but if you still want to try it there's this utility.

To which are you referring? Multi-monitor support options (Ultramon functionality) or multiple terminal/desktops, such as Apple's Spaces?

I got the impression he was talking about the latter. If that is the case you already have something better, an application centric GUI and superbar.

I'm running absolutely fine with two monitors. I know there isn't multidesk with one monitor, but it works fine with 2 physical monitors.

Ultramon released a new beta release, which now functions properly on Seven now, but has the Vista taskbar appearance, oddly enough. Regardless, that isn't what the OP's asking for.

What he's after is something like VirtuaWin, but integrated and polished.

SysInternals Desktops is a PITA to use, because it essentially creates a new instance of your user account's logon for each desktop, each with its own instance of explorer. A lot of stuff breaks in that environment, because it expects to only be run once (Firefox, for instance), and I would think you couldn't move things between desktops, although I didn't stick with it long enough to know / it's been too long since I tried it.
