95.5% Piracy rate; And Yet it Moves Developer Interview

Recommended Posts

4. Less exposure, less feedback.

I may or may not have 'played' a pirated game somehow, liked it enough to actually buy it. I would of never bought it right out without trialing it first!

Quality games do well, as in - they sell well, even when they're pirated.

Damn Straight...

you make a lot of good points Inclined

Read reviews/play demos/ask people on Neowin how the game is.

lol, yeah, screw those developers for wanting money out of the games they create! Greedy devs.

Not every game has a demo, and even so - not all demos show the real game, granted the retail is a better product than its beta version, but still.

Reviews and asking people is basically the same, for example FIFA/PES debates, a never ending battle, I for one will not buy FIFA, it's crap. But reviews say that it's awesome.

So.. demos and reviews is not everything.

And yeah, that's exactly what greed is, I didn't say games should be free for all, they (devs) should be paid, but they are whining about piracy like it's not their own fault for making a horrible game. (As I said, good games sell well.)

I got my copy of Bioshock legally for about ?3.70 and it's probably the best ?3.70 I have ever spent. I have seen a lot of internet postings (particularly on my walkthroughs posted on Youtube) from people complaining that their cracked versions don't work.

For me paying the money is worth it if it means the game works flawlessly with all its intended functionality intact. And that is coming from someone who isn't even really into multiplayer internet gaming.

It depends a lot on the game. I wouldn't even waste my time on a game like And Yet It Moves.

I did purchase Call of Duty 4 and play it all the time. I purchased Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and play it all the time. I purchased Battlefield 2 and all it's expansions and booster packs and play them all the time.

Those games all feature Punkbuster which will not only kick cheaters but also kick for duplicate CD keys. In fact, Call of Duty 4 will connect to the network and detect if your key is being used. So developers just need to find a way to make it so people WANT to buy the game and play it all the time.

Whining about And Yet It Moves? That's one of the most garbage looking games I have ever seen.

I think it's more complex than a game's apparent quality. There are other factors involved in a yet-to-be pirate's decision to pirate X game. In any case, the biggest factors are popularity and availability. If a game is popular and readily available on warez sites, then chances are a lot of pirates will download it. And that's regardless if the game is "bad" or "good".

Games are usually popular for a reason, such as being good. Tell me a game that is popular yet bad, and I'll see if I can get you some stats. (I hereby forbid you to use The Sims as an example) :p

All games are freely available, so that point is mute.

Excuse me, but it isn't "couldn't care less". That implies an impossibility to care less.

Exactly. You care so little, that you couldn't possibly care any less. "I couldn't care less, even if I tried"

"I could care less" Could you? Could you really care less? Because I couldn't.

See how that works?

I don't understand. What do you mean by "nowhere near as much."?

Crap games will not be pirated as much as good games, nowhere near as much.

Yes, that much is true. It's an unfortunate consequence of ... well, a lot of things. It's always the popular games that have the highest pirating rates. And at the same time, it's always the games with high ratings that sell well. Though it isn't surprising that, most of the time, the games with high ratings are also the games with a lot of popularity.

So after a lot of stating the obvious, we are agreed. Thank **** for that :)

$15 is still alot for a pos game.

i paid $16 for "The Ship" off steam, and felt ripped off ever since.

If it's a "POS" game, then don't play it!

I don't understand why people use this as an excuse to pirate the game. A very large majority of pirates are freeloaders, end of. There have been great games which have been released at the $9.99 price point and still been pirated to hell and back. Price isn't an issue. Quality isn't an issue. They just want free stuff.

So if a game scores less it means it's fair to pirate it? How about you don't play it if it doesn't interest you.

I love making these kinds of topics to see all the hilarious reasons people bring up to defend piracy

well it is possible people could pirate it try it once realize how badly the game sucks and never play it again?

A negative PC gaming thread started by a non-pc gamer and ps3 fanboy. How is this not trolling? Let me start a thread on why the PS3 sucks in the PS3 sub forum and I'll even include a link to an interview with Gabe Newell and why he thinks it sucks too.

Who's they ?

Majority of the groups that release games (oh wait, "pirate" them) are against P2P and sharing, they do it for themselves, fun or challenge, whatever floats their boat.

We just jump on the bandwagon, we're not "pirates".

Can you name that game that is so great, costs 10$ and doesn't sell well due to "piracy" ? Most of the games I know cost in the 40~$ region and they're not even that good.

Oh yeah, "quality" isn't just how pretty the game is, it's the longevity of it, an awesome game that ends in just 4 hours isn't worth 10$, well maybe 10, but not more than that.

I see many people never even read the article where the Felix responds saying that he is well aware that pirated games aren't one-to-one with lost sales. The percentage is determined from their online servers. Note the line that says "[...] must be hitting your servers hard".

Justifying piracy because the game isn't any good is idiotic. If you honestly thought it was a bad game you wouldn't have any interest in playing it. Obviously you wanted to play the game when you downloaded it.

Demoing is not an excuse either. You can either download a demo if one is available or read reviews. Additionally, I have serious doubts that you're going to purchase the game after you've just obtained it for free.

Downloading a game because it is too expensive is not a valid reason either. If you think it cost too much then don't buy it.

You know it really just comes down to one thing: lack of ethics. You know you can get these games for free, you know it's wrong, and you do so anyway.

slow down you're going to give your self skin failure ;)

thats not true take overhyped games (halo/crysis) etc (haha guess i don't really read all the news in regards to games as their usually a let down)

you're all psyked up you buy the game take it home and think to you're self...wow this is horrible i wish i could take it back...in most cases you can but if you could try before you buy then sure why not (thats for the completely honest people where demo's are not available)

lack of ethics is game developers releasing incomplete/broken games and expecting you to pay for content that should have already been there *points at pain on ps3* its a rather small game something you'd expect from a flash application (ok it has fancy graphics but still) and for you to get the most out of the game you have to buy a individual things theres no earning them anymore you have to pay for new characters/levels and you only get a couple to start with

also the responses for people saying the game isn't selling good aren't saying its being pirated because of that its just not being bought because it sucks where if the game was good then there'd still be a large amount of users actually paying for the game not everyone pirates

also i'm curious as to why their tracking unlegit/pirate versions of the game and allowing them to run on their server (i'm assuming) if they prevent pirated copies from accessing their servers then these pirates would have more incentive to buy they'd play around with single player mode enjoy the game and want to play multiplayer (i'm not agreeing with it but just saying theres no real alternative)

You have to play the game before you know it's bad so your "overhyped" clause makes no sense. You either know ahead of time or you already have it.

I fail to see how what I said relates to the PS3. Explain.

read the rest of my post

pain is a game on the ps3 i use pain as a reference in my post towards your point on 'lack of ethics' it has nothing directly to do with the ps3 except the fact the game i'm talking about is only on the ps3 (as far as i'm aware)

You have to play the game before you know it's bad so your "overhyped" clause makes no sense. You either know ahead of time or you already have it.

Exactly which means you've bought the game and realized it sucks i'm pretty sure i made this clear in my post :s

Ethics eh? And the retail industries are bastions of ethics right? It used to be that they'd have your money and you'd have that empty feeling of just being ripped off after finding that what you though was going to be something a little special was in fact utter crap. The media industries would rather still have people in the position where they can sell them crap based on carefully selected trailers, screenshots or completely biased reviews from industry shills. The shoe is on the other foot and now it's their turn to whine about being ripped off. My heart bleeds. Lack of ethics? You bet, I'm off to play Sims3.

Dev's would LOVE it, people buying games uncontrollably only to realize time after time that they're not good, and yet come back and buy the next game.

I pity you if you buy games based on other people's opinion, buy EVERY game and don't learn from your mistakes.

"Pirates" are evolved gamers :p

Now it's the infamous some-vendors-are-######-therefore-I-can-pirate. Please, it's still illegal and unethical regardless of whether or not their business practices are.

And again, you either heard the game sucked or you played it and found out later. If you bought it then got screwed that doesn't mean you can pirate other titles. It really makes no sense "I bought the game and it sucked so I downloaded the same game I just bought illegally". Furthermore, there are many tools available to you to determine whether or not a game is going to be any good, reviews--and not just professional ones--and videos are namely some. You can always wait for somebody else to take the plunge as well.

Still don't get the PS3 bashing comment. You left a post that said not to turn this into PS3 bashing and directed it towards my post. Where did I ever mention the PS3?

are you talking about other titiles or are you talking about downloading the same game you bought?? either way, someone who does what you said would be doing it wrong, i mean what a waste of bandwidth downloading a game you already know you dont like

the idea is you download it first, play it, then decide wether its worth your money, that way you never end up with a situation where you bought a game to find that it sucked... if i have been screwed and i download my next game before i buy it, its called 'learning a lesson'

especially the next game from the same people who made the game that i got screwed into buying

Furthermore, there are many tools available to you to determine whether or not a game is going to be any good, reviews--and not just professional ones--and videos are namely some. You can always wait for somebody else to take the plunge as well.

yeah, it'll be like seeing someone use a toaster and knowing that it works, right? somehow you know how the game is going to play without actually playing it, because if you watch enough videos and read enough reviews you can absorb the gameplay or something? and oh, not accounting for the fact that in every good game out there, every single time a human plays it , it will be slightly different, mainly because humans dont do the same things again and again, unlike what happens when a video is played... its called interactivity

for example, i could find a glitch or some hidden content before anyone else

You can determine a lot from videos and reviews. Yes, they won't give you the experience of playing the game they will give you some insight as to whether or not you're going to enjoy it. I've turned away from games I was initially interested in after watching some gameplay videos with commentary.

You're asking for something impossible. You can't like every game. Not every game will live up to your expectations. That's normal. That still doesn't mean you can just download and play games whenever you want.

The whole demoing thing doesn't hold up in reality. You download the full version of the game. You crack it. You decide you like it. Why bother paying for something you just got for free? I doubt many people buy the games they downloaded just because they liked it.

Without "piracy" :

1. Sales stay the same, you can't tie "pirated" copies to "sales", or lack of.

2. Quality of the product stays the same.

3. Less people play the game.

4. Less exposure, less feedback.

Piracy or not, most of us won't buy a game for the heck of it, not that I'm in a dire financial situation, but regardless - I'm not going to waste my money such way.

Quality games do well, as in - they sell well, even when they're pirated.

Also, this "greed" is a two way street, whoever is behind selling games and all that is just as greedy as the "pirates", they want more money in the pockets, even though their product isn't worth it most of the time.

You don't get to decide what a game is worth. You do get to decide if it is worth your money, but you don't get to set the price. If it isn't worth it to you, than don't buy it, and don't play it. Developers aren't greedy for trying to sell their games to pay the bills. It takes a lot of money to make a game, and they are trying to make profit on their games. I don't think game developers think a game is going to be worth the same amount to everyone, and they've probably accepted that if they create a game it's going to be pirated to some extent, and none of this makes them greedy. They have a product, which you will either buy or not buy, based on the utility you expect to get from said product.

This isn't to say that the gaming industry doesn't have its fair share of greed (read: EA) but you can't blame every developer for charging what they feel is a fair price for their hard work.

I don't. I get the demo. If the demo is nonexistant I assume the company is covering up a crappy game. If the demo is buggy, I assume the game is.

Note to game publishers: Release demos for your game, and release them with production code.
