King Antonius
From Engadget http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/16/datel-g...for-xbox-360-s/ After ages of monopolizing most of its add-on market for the 360, it looks like Microsoft is letting up a bit. Datel just came out with two new MAX Memory cards that are compatible with the console, in 2GB and 4GB capacities. That's all well and boring, but the potential excitement here is that cards can also be augmented by a microSD slot, with support for up to 16GB cards, for some trippy card-within-a-card hijinks, and what might be one of the best portals for hackers yet. Or perhaps not, since it seems likely that Microsoft wouldn't open up what it knew to be a major security hole, and given the numerous other interfaces with the console, the 360 is still pretty well on lockdown for the average user, after almost four years on the market. At least this should provide a slightly more flexible hard drive alternative for folks who don't want to shell out for Microsoft's overpriced humps. The Datel cards start at $40. Nice. Means i can take my live account and all my DLC to myfriends without having to stick my HDD in a bag.

Sethos
40$ for 2GB :blink:That's just as bad as MS hard drive prices :/ And you did notice the fact you could add your own Micro SDs?
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted May 16, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted May 16, 2009 Oh well I guess what I'm saying is expensive storage is still expensive. And you did notice the fact you could add your own Micro SDs? Yes I did, base cost is still expensive. Mod you own hard drive, 120GB can be purchased for like $50 I think, maybe even less. King Antonius
See, i allready have an 8gb MicroSD card that i dont use anymore. (From an old phone), and this would be perfect. My xbox is not in a convinient place to be taking the hard drive off all the time. This would be perfect for me as i could stick all my arcade games and my profile on it, and swap it between the 3 xboxes in the house, and take it round to a friends. I would much rather pop this in my pocket than get my HDD, stick it in a bag, then carry the bag about.
+InsaneNutter MVC Posted May 16, 2009 MVC Share Posted May 16, 2009 This would be perfect for me as i could stick all my arcade games and my profile on it, and swap it between the 3 xboxes in the house, and take it round to a friends. That?s what I?m thinking, I can take everything with me where ever I go. My 64mb card at the moment has enough room for a couple of profiles and that?s it! It would be nice to have all my saves on the memory card along with any DLC / Arcade games.
t0mbi
This breakthrough i think, will soon lead to more discoveries..AKA bigger hard drives etc..well i hope anyways! Cause it seems that Datel have 'cracked' the Xbox's storage protection... :ninja:

George P Global Moderator Posted May 17, 2009 Global Moderator Share Posted May 17, 2009 It won't be coming, but if they'd let others sell HDDs that'd be something. Anyways it seems this has a 16GB microSD card limit, so you can't use bigger ones (if they even have them yet?) Still 16GB is a good chunk, and you can keep buying more if you need it, better than buying the 120GB hdd I guess. I think MS should open up the storage options for USB hdds though, and let them be used as the normal hdd is as well. But I bet that'll never happen either. Such a pity. carmatic
mmm... i might sound abit far fetched with this, but could this be part of microsoft's strategy for that handheld gaming console that those rumous floating around are about? specifically, the support for microsd could mean that you could transfer stuff over to the hypothetical handheld gaming console that way 40$ for 2GB :blink:That's just as bad as MS hard drive prices :/ remember that you are also paying for the intergrated microsd reader

Eric Veteran Posted May 17, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 17, 2009 They wouldnt be selling these if they had "cracked" it. Microsoft have given them permission to make them. That's how Datel operates. They never had permission to make Gamecube Action Replay discs either. They were signed with a fake key. I've never had a piece of Datel equipment work right. Their PS1 and GC cards routinely corrupted themselves. :( The PS2 version of the Action Replay used specially manufactured discs, with the centre part of the disc containing the copy protection information cut from officially licensed games (presumably bought in bulk somehow, perhaps bankrupt stock) and glued to the middle of the Action Replay disc. They did this with the GC one too. They bought a bunch of copies of NHL Hitz or something like that and cut the protection ring out of the center. George P Global Moderator Posted May 18, 2009 Global Moderator Share Posted May 18, 2009 If it's not official at all, then Datel could very well start offering HDD units of some sort in the future? Unless the 360 will only take hdds that are 20,60 and 120GB due to some hardcoding done somewhere. Only time will tell I guess.
