crazlunatic
I heard Apple was working on an $800 mac or some netbook equivalent, is this true? When are they going to release it?

Stetson
They do already have an $899 iMac that they sell to schools for labs, they could theoretically release something like that for consumers. The notebook line is quickly being outdated, other companies are moving too quickly for Apple to only update specs once a year. They need to move the Macbooks down one slot each, the 2.4Ghz Macbook should be at $1299-$1399, the 2.0 at $999-$1099, and the whitebook at $799-$899 to get back to the position they were in in October when first released. Hell-In-A-Handbasket
800 bucks for a netbook wont sell imo, the whole point of the netbook thing is they are cheap

Minimoose
I thought it was that they were tiny. I thought the definition was <13 inch screen and <~$500, just saw it somewhere, don't know if thats true, thought it was a bit weird to classify a product by price though. Raikou Tch
Nobody's going to pay over $500 for an Atom-based laptop, so anything more would be ridiculous. If it doesn't have an Atom or an equivalent low-power CPU, it's not a netbook anymore. Anything they come up with needs to be cheap or a bit more powerful than most netbooks, or nobody's going to buy it. The Vaio P is way too expensive; the only reason I might be able to accept that insane price is because of the nice screen and integrated GPS. StandingInAlley
cheaper and lighter but then Apple will throw in a full touchscreen multi-touch enabled and will charge 800$ to justify it
Raikou Tch
Sure they will its apple ! This might be true, but I think right now people aren't looking to spend a huge amount of money on anything. They've never had an inexpensive computer, and now's their chance to actually get their OS X userbase to include people that don't have money to blow/college students. And why would you want a touchscreen netbook? It makes no sense unless it's a tablet, and I think they'd want to make an expensive, high-performance tablet before a cheaply-configured netbook. Rudy
There are some netbooks over $800 (the Sony one comes to mind here)
Growled Member Posted May 17, 2009 Member Share Posted May 17, 2009 Sure they will its apple ! I agree. Apple products are nice but a little on the pricey side. People who purchase their products don't seem to have a problem with prices, or they would look elsewhere.
General Disarray
The thing that is limiting netbook specs at the moment is just the xp netbook license agreement, which obviously is not a problem for apple, therefore they could make a more powerful netbook than any windows based one. Brian M. Veteran Posted May 17, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 17, 2009 I think an $800 Apple netbook would actually be a success - I'd certainly buy one (while current netbooks are cheap, every one I've used has an utterly terrible build quality).
