Is the auto-configuration in Outlook 2010 new?

Recommended Posts

I've never found it so easy in Outlook before to set up all my e-mail accounts. But in Outlook 2010, I typed in my AOL e-mail and password, my Gmail e-mail and password and my WLM e-mail and password, clicked "Next" and then Outlook configured all three perfectly within a minute. Is this something new? Because even in Outlook 2007, I always had to end up going into the settings and changing the server port numbers, etc.

I guess what I'm saying is that I'm very impressed with Outlook 2010 so far, as it has made setting up multiple accounts much easier than I was expecting.

That's pretty sweet. On a similar note, I uninstalled 2007 in order to install 2010 x64, and when I opened it, Outlook 2010 somehow retained all of my settings, including account info, contacts, tasks, calendar, and notes, even after I uninstalled 2007 and rebooted... I'm intrigued...

That's always the case with Outlook. It never deletes your user data. At least not on any version I've used since Outlook 97.

Is that so? Fair enough, I did not know that haha :)

That sounds well and good but I have hesitated to go with 'auto configurators' because for example with Gmail, I prefer to use IMAP but would that configurator attempt to use POP3 instead?

It set up IMAP for me, because that's what I have in the Gmail settings.

@cpenner

AppData\Microsoft\Outlook\*.* remains untouched on uninstallation. Guess where is your user data :)

Haha yea that I knew, but I just assumed uninstalling Office 2007 would wipe the folder. Guess I was wrong haha.

MS looks forward to your comeback to their products :)

Great, I can't wait to test out Office 2010. I already love 2007 so much, I'm sure 2010 will only enhance the experience.

I'm curious does Office 2010 support Live ids (MSN, Hotmail, Live) without having to install Outlook connector?

You can probably get it to work using POP settings but by default it does not. Also the Outlook connector doesn't work with it (yet).

It seemed to set up my WLM account fine. I'm able to use it, read and delete e-mails, etc.
