Stetson
Currently I think they charge a fairly low price to big manufacturers like Dell while charging a much higher price for retail. I think that piracy would be much lower if the retail price were more reasonable, or even if you could just pay online for a license without the box and media. It should also be easy to keep using your legitimate license and install it on one or two more computers. I've had to install illegitimate versions of XP before but in each case I or the user already had a license, it was just lost or unusable for some silly technical reason. Migra
Well if this is true, I think that the 'Laptop Hunters' Ads are now contradictory, IF this is true it's time to buy a Mac and NEVER go back to Windows, If my only 2 options are that expensive, well it's obvious I'll go for the one THAT WORKS! Quillz
Keep in mind that what's being quoted are going to be retail prices. Almost everyone will get their copy of Windows via OEM, which are far cheaper. And Microsoft always seems to offer promotions and educational discounts. waruikoohii
Well 3 years of updates from Vista, 8 years of updates with Windows XP.OSX updates are a lot more frequent. They should charge less. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS#Mac_OS_X_Cat_Names I think it is fair. But they should allow more than one install per household. Piracy should never be an option. But I actually care about the developers who made the software. Apple also makes huge profits off the hardware. They can afford to not make a huge profit from their software. Microsoft doesn't make the hardware, they need to profit off of the software.
dcoaster
Wouldn't higher prices at retail signal an increase at the OEM level as well? I know the price for OEMs is no where near that of retail, but there has to be some correlation...

Thoughts?http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-10242555...torsPicksArea.0 it better not be more than vista or i refuse to buy it. ill stick with my vista license or switch to linux full time, i mean it too. this is bullsh** Yeah, me too. But then again, I'm sure the price will be reasonable anyway. if it's more than vista, they are ripping us off! 7 = polished vista, point blank! don't forget we are talking about micro$oft here, nothing is reasonable. Growled Member Posted May 17, 2009 Member Share Posted May 17, 2009 I doubt if I will buy it. I will stick with Vista and Kubuntu. I think this will hurt adoption in the short term.
WelshBluebird
Shouldn't affect me. I'm assuming I'll be able to get a copy on MDSNAA thanks to my uni :) And really, I don't think this will affect anything. Very few people actually buy a new version of windows on its own. Most of the time it just comes with a new computer. Adding a little bid to the retail price really isn't going to do much at all.
bob_c_b
OEM license from Newegg will be quite affordable.

CPressland
So you are saying... "I will always pirate"...For people like you the price will never be low enough :| Which is precisely why I've bought every copy of Windows I've ever owned! Sorry mate, I forgot that you knew absolutely everything about me, 'for people like you..' PSH! Why pirate it? :| If you can't afford it then stay with Windows Vista or XP (whatever you currently use) until the price lowers, or you can afford it. Well, I still plan to buy it if the price is acceptable, but no way in hell am I going back to the pile'o'junk which is Vista (by comparison to 7). So, to answer your question, 'Cause I can
08993
As ironic as it sounds, another way to get a cheap licence is to install a pirated copy but don't crack it, get caught by WGA, follow the links and buy the Genuine Advantage kit! OEM is usually slightly cheaper though, although bizarrely enough the OEM licence is more restrictive.

Gibletz
Hmm, this might increase Linux market shares a bit, they wanted to take a bite out of Ubuntu netbooks, but now they can't with an oversized price tag VS. Ubuntu's free price tag. Which is precisely why I've bought every copy of Windows I've ever owned! Sorry mate, I forgot that you knew absolutely everything about me, 'for people like you..' George P Global Moderator Posted May 18, 2009 Global Moderator Share Posted May 18, 2009 Until MS gives us retail or OEM prices we don't know if they'll be the same or not. Some guy at dell or his cousin don't know what the prices will be, why would they? Since when does MS tell them what they're retail prices will be? And the article isn't talking about OEM prices it seems. I'll wait for the official prices from MS when we're ready for release.
