cropcircles
I can't believe people actually play these games!! Yet they seem to be number 1 in the charts all the time :( dito. My daughter use to play the hell out of those Sims games. I'd go in her room and her house would be on fire or she'd have some weird scenario where she had a party going on in a house with friends over. Your right these are huge fan favorites but nothing can touch The World of Warcraft community. That is just freightening. The Sims 3 will not use DRM
Crompee
so with this game leaking 3 weeks early and some other titles now having DRM able to keep the game protected for 2-3 weeks or so after release.... I don't see a bright future for further no DRM releases. This is a EA Problem and nothing to do with DRM. If the game had DRM on it, it would still of been leaked early and then highly likely to of been cracked within 24hours (going by the previous EA DRM titles). If the DRM had required files/decryption from EA servers it would of been impossible to play the leak until the servers went live therefore blocking the ability for anyone to play a leak and reducing "damage". However due to EA choosing not to put DRM in The Sims 3 now that its leaked everyone can play it.

It does, no .exe is provided with the installation and the Scene NFO states "Be sure to have a firewall prevent the launcher and main game from going online.", so either they were daft and had the servers online already, to allow the 'stolen' copy of the game to download the .exe and have someone modify it or the .exe was procured some other way. starburst1980
I believe this is EA fault but not for having a leak. I think that they may have shipped to retailers TOO early and therfore it has leaked by some source. And why the hell is the torrents name in the picture? This is free publicity for the leaker and the leak. If it wasnt for this thread, I would have not known it leaked.
jonhapimp
blabla sins of a solar empire didn't have any drm and it sold amazingly well
etempest
If that's a problem I can blur it out?I know it's a risky topic, but it's a fairly substantial hit to EA now with two games leaking very early and definitely a talking point. People scream "DRM, no buy", but if something without nasty DRM leaks 3 weeks early you can be sure many of these people are probably hoping on board for a free game. No DRM just makes it 10x easier for the pirates. It's times like this releasing something through steam seems like a good option as it's encrypted until release - But that would damage sales of The Sims due to it's widespread popularity worldwide, people/casuals need it on disc. I think the point is mute, release the game with senesable DRM (to keep the honest people honest), the pirates will have any drm broken within days, if not hours. It's when you have huge drm that inconvience the legit users, and does zero for the pirates is when they cause the most problems.
SMELTN
I mean honestly, wtf, how can you stop this? And as more and more people learn how to use the interwebs, more and more people will be doing this kind of stuff. How will it ever stop? I mean it really does suck because it is hurting everyone in the long run. I mean the people who seem to be making money now is the pay2play games, and the free2play but pay for extra content, since you can control that. You sure? I just asked about that and apparently it does come with an exe file. There's no other way it would work unless the activation servers were up for a while. Crackers can't make an exe file out of nothing.
ObiWanToby
If i were EA I'd just try to control early reviews of the game and not worry about the impact on sales. I firmly believe good games sell. If Sims 3 is good, it'll do alright, if not.....

Checkign with a server if the key is legit is not DRM. The game doesn't have DRM. it requires a key activation and a legit key, that's pretty much it. on top of that they check that the key is valid (or they may do, it doesn't seem if even the crackers know for sure, just a precaution). this is the same thing that games did before DRM. and what all the ANTI DRM people call non having DRM themselves. And the servers don't even need to be online for a system like this, as it only pings the servers if it can, it's not required to play the game or to activate or validate it. Not calling anything DRM either, just talking to Audioboxer about the copy protection system employed by the new Sims game and trying to pinpoint what kind of system it is. I don't give a rats ass if something is DRM or not.

Minifig
Wow, since when did people start sympathizing for EA this much? I haven't .. behold my first reply to this thread: -- . I love it. EA has an internal leaker to the public so they're going to go around firing a whole lot of innocents and more than likely **** off the leaker or people aren't the leaker more, and cause them to want to do this more.. Smaaaaaart thinking EA.
