Androidslave
I was just wondering if the idea of a "Thank you" button whereby a member or members that find a post helpful of informative or one that there was significant effort in constructing could be thanked. A site that i visit alot implimented the function about 12 months ago. There were at the start restrictions on the amount of "thanks" a user could give in a day in the fear that it would be abused - however since been lifted, I just find - particularly for example in RWI that if there is a point in a post or a good article posted that i am unconsiously about to "thank" it when i remember its the wrong site! Im sure this is probably not the first time that this has been brought up, but i thought id add my 2 cents.
Andrew Lyle Global Moderator Posted May 18, 2009 Global Moderator Share Posted May 18, 2009 I think this has been brought up before... Not sure where the discussion ended up, but it's a cool idea.
Sethos
I'd love to see some sort of Karma / Rep / 'Thanks' system but I have my doubts about it being implemented on Neowin :)
Clinteger
I, too, have visited sites that implement this.. but I still don't really see the point. Personally, you can generally judge whether a post is well liked by the amount of replies, and when it displays a list of users that have thanked the post, it just takes up my screen space. Andrew Lyle Global Moderator Posted May 18, 2009 Global Moderator Share Posted May 18, 2009 We'll from a programmers point of view it could be very helpful. If someone is looking for a solution to a code they have written, or maybe even for Windows support it might be very helpful.

Draconian Guppy
Easily abused. Exactly, I think this is why it was turned down the first time. Because anyone could easily give you bad rep or lower your "thanks level" simply because of pure fanboyism or because they just can.
Andrew Lyle Global Moderator Posted May 18, 2009 Global Moderator Share Posted May 18, 2009 Easily abused. Not if it was properly thought out, and only available to give "thanks" by the original thread creator.

No, you can only give a thank you once per post, you can only remove your own thanks - there is no negative thanks - meaning there is no taking away of thanks. If it was impleminted with a restriction per day on the numer of thanks that one can give i dont see the problem - no have i come across the problem. I have seen that they do disable this feature in certain foura also
what
Would be as useful as the thread rating system, except it would require more modifications between upgrades...
Androidslave
Would be as useful as the thread rating system, except it would require more modifications between upgrades... Thread rating systems are easier to abuse by one starring a good thread by the aforementioned fanboys - With a thanks system you can only show your support or appreciation. If you support a obvious troll post your name is clearly visible at the bottom of the post where the thanls are displayed so you are really showing yourself up
Fred Derf Veteran Posted May 18, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 18, 2009 IPB 3.x may have more options in this area than IPB 2.x We will likely look into these options in more detail as we get closer to the upgrade.
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted May 18, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted May 18, 2009 If your only option is to hit thanks how can that be abused? Unless the new fanboy trend is to say thanks to the people they dislike  I've seen this on many other forums, you push the thanks button then at the bottom or top, or somewhere on the forum there is a list of names of the people who clicked thanks. Of course that's for saying thanks for a topic. I believe the idea here is you can say thanks to any post (including first) ?
lee31
I'm still confused as to why the Forum button is the only one without a drop down menu when on the main page. It's really annoying having to click on it first in order to see and use the drop down menu. Anyways on this topic I think it would be a good idea however the rating system is very rarely used as it is so I have doubts as to whether this would catch on and make any real difference. Ironman273
Audio has a point. If you can only give a positive "thanks" then the abuse should be non-existant. It would be good for posts that help someone and an incentive to post constructive comments.

I'll agree with you there, if it's only "thanks" then it's not as likely to be abused, but still can be to a small extent. My "easily abused" comment was more referring to a full on karma system with positive/negative, etc.
Growled Member Posted May 19, 2009 Member Share Posted May 19, 2009 I know the Ubuntu forums had the thanks button for a long time and I believe they had to get rid of it because it was slowing down the forum. Could be wrong about that.

Could be wrong about that. Yes, we are leery of hacking things into IPB 2.x for this reason. Every hack we apply has a cost associated with it. If IPB 3.x has something similar that is part of its internal workings then there is a good chance that it will not be as costly as one of our hacks (as clever as our boys are). Ferret
I was gonna start a new thread, but did a search and found this - Thought it was pointless starting a new one. But I think this is a great idea... I've just been looking through 'Real World News' and noticed that there is only a couple of replys to most threads, yet they have hundreds of views. So just a quick "Thanks" button to show your appreciatation on the time the person has taken to post the news. IPB 3.x may have more options in this area than IPB 2.xWe will likely look into these options in more detail as we get closer to the upgrade. So any news on this for the upgrade ?
