I don't seem to be having much luck with all this bank stuff, do I?

A couple of weeks ago, I tried to purchase a new TV on my debit card, and was hoping to use the finance option available. I got all the way through until you have to pay, which is where my first problem comes in.

I put in all my card details and then clicked next (this is on dixons website) then get a box come up wanting a few more details, like my name and card number, mothers maiden name. I used everything what I thought was right, then tells me I'm wrong and now won't be able to use my card on there site any longer, because I gave incorrect details. I later found out its a new thing that Lloyds TSB do (I think) called "Clicksafe", first time i've heard of it.

Last time I used my card online was about a week ago when I brought something off play.com.

I used my debit card out a little bit too, last wednesday, I withdrew a small sum from a cash point, a few days before I used it at somerfield, everything seems ok here.

So now my problem, I tryed to purchase something else off play.com and for some reason it got declined...I tryed purchasing some things off ebay too, and the only option I have to pay with is my debit card (for this particular transaction, usually its a bank transfer), when I try and go through with it I get an error "This card cannot be used for this transaction. You can complete the checkout with another debit or credit card. Please enter your new card information below." I've never had problems like this before.

Has the bank put a stop on my card or something?

I don't know what to do, I don't like phoning them either, because they are always "northeners", and being a "southerner" I find it hard to understand them sometimes. But If I have to then fine.

Cheers.

Calling them is probably the smartest idea, especially if this is happening with many purchases. The only issue I've ever had with my bank card is on Steam, I get declined if I put in my primary billing address, but it works fine if I use my secondary one... lol.

Just call them, or as Bhav suggested - go to a branch. If you can't understand the person you're talking to, you can always make up an excuse that it's a bad line at your end and they need to speak slowly and clearly.

You won't find out why it's being declined unless you speak to someone. They're generally not northerners on the end of the line either - on more than 1 occasion I've spoken to helpful ladies of various ages who I gather were from the Bristol area.

The longer you leave it, the more it'll be an inconvenience to you.

Has your card been renewed lately?

I had a problem with my Lloyds TSB credit card the other day, and it turned out that they had a system bug which reactivated my old card, and deactivated my new one by mistake (there's no feeling like having your credit card declined for no reason in the middle of a busy store - especially when it isn't your fault :p).

Lloyds have their own anti-fraud stuff, everyone else just uses Verified by Visa.

Call them, get the lock removed.

Think you will find other banks also have their own protection. Nationwide also have online purchase protection, which gives an extra level of security when making online transactions.

That Clicksafe thing is a pain in the backside. I can never remember the password I set for it .. it won't allow punctuation marks which are included in my standard "set" of passwords (I would never be able to remember 50 different passwords so some do have to be similar/the same).

Anyway, on topic, did you check your account balance? I expect that if you have an overdraft facility they will just take it out, but if not, if your account is low then it might get stopped.

Perhaps the card was blocked for a fixed time after the first time you were declined. You should phone or visit them next time to find out.

Also ... do not go mad buying TVs and stuff on finance or with your overdraft! Unless you have the money available now/very soon you will regret it. In a few years time you will still be paying for any overspend now, but you will have nothing to show for it when that TV is old and knackered. I know because myself and others I know have made the same mistake and it's pretty bitter when you're paying out huge amounts to a loan company every month for something you don't even have anymore.

I usually don't buy that much stuff, when I do buy alot of stuff, I buy lots of little things that cost very little like I have recently, because I like modelling, so have been buying paints, and spray paints ect ect which are quite cheap.

I don't have an overdraft, and don't really want one.

Weird thing is, after I started this thread, like 10mins after it failed and i tried it again, its worked?

We can't really give you an answer as to why it's happening. You may be typing in something wrong, it could be something at the bank, there could be an issue directly related to your card and the places you are trying to use it.

You need to call your bank and find out what is happening just to ensure your card isn't going to be shut off, you don't have multiple charges or fees being added on.

I went to KFC last night with my mate and my card was being declinded again, so today I phoned them, and I was passed to the fraud department, just genuine things I guess, should all be sorted now though.

Cheers.

WTF?

Look, i really dont want to be rude or nasty to you mate, but lets face it, you have a really bad track record with this kind of stuff. I even said as soon as you mentioned credit cards that ill await the threads where you get in debt and confused on using it as well as then probably blaming the bank itself.

So far i seem to be heading in the right direction wouldnt you say?

My advice overall to you would be to stop using the card. Cut it up and throw it away after paying back what you already owe.

From the things you have mentioned in this and other threads, you sound like you are using it for pretty much every purchase you make. This in my mind is dangerous. Using it so often and for such little things as a KFC, can mean you dont realise how much you have spent until its too late.

Credit cards are not like debit cards mate. At least with debit cards you can go in to debt and not have to pay such crazy money back for being in debt. Credit cards mean you pay lots for being in debt to it etc and can dig yourself in to a large hole.

Im not trying to be rude and im only giving you advise based on what i know of you from what i have seen in your threads in the past, please dont be offended, but just try to understand where i am coming from with this.

He posted about his debit card, not a credit card.

You ever been in debt on a debit card?! Fees are extortionate.

Credit card give you a certain degree of flexibility when it comes to making large purchases. I am glad I have mine.

i thought you cant use debit card unless you have enough money in your checking account. thats what a debit card for. you dont owe money for using debit card, credit card does.

It seems that UK debit cards don't work quite the same way that ours here in the US do. They pretty much all seem to have some type of what we would call "overdraft protection" (a term they use differently there) or a limited credit limit on them. Most debit cards here in the US don't have that unless you specifically ask the bank for it, which leads to lots of confusion when both UK and US people are talking about debit cards in the same thread.

?2000 in debt mate. ?45 each month i was in debt. I believe credit cards far outweigh the charges that you get on a debit though.

Sorry Jasonc, please disregard my previous post. I was wrong... Could have sworn this was in relation to your credit car:s:s

    • Just pull a 4Chan and ignore the UK gov, or better troll them. It's not like they can enforce the fine across border.
    • It has NEVER been shown that all these overreaching creepy methods of surveillance have ever saved a child or prevented a terrorist attack. Not a single one. It's the kind of people like you who just wave it away as "paranoid conspiracy" that makes big tech and governments this creepy mass data hoarding entities. Not only that, 3/4 of these surveillance ideas undermine the very foundations of safe online communication because they always want to have a backdoor in everything "just in case" they might need it to... checks the notes "save the children". If you put a backdoor into encryption chain there is no encryption chain anymore. You know what encryption keeps safe? Your medical records, your online shopping and credit card during payment, your photos in the cloud, your emails, your passwords, everything. There is ZERO guarantee only the good guys will use it. And if you think police suddenly can't apprehend child abusers because of encryption, Epstein was running his entire sex trafficking ring using GMail which is not even encrypted end to end. Or to make matters even worse, USA has a **** and a good buddy of Epstein as a president. Absolutely NOTHING has been done to address it. Maxwell just got a better "hotel" room as a reward. This clearly shows how they absolutely don't really care about the children but they care about the absolute control over all of us. And you're defending them here. Good grief. On top of constant attempts to insert backdoors into encryption chain, the entire age verification nonsense is again entirely over reaching, creepy, invades everyone's privacy with premise of yet again "protecting the children" instead of demanding device makers to provide simple and powerful tools for PARENTS to control how their children use devices and what they do on them. THIS would be the way, not the stupid age verification for everyone. Imagine if government would be dictating companies how their phones work and not the company's IT department. The parents should be the IT department to their children. And for everyone excusing "they are not knowledgeable enough" buuuuuulsheat. We live in a digital age, if you have children now, you absolutely are well versed in digital everything at least to basic extent. If you're not, how do you even function in these times then? Reality is that parents are just lazy and don't want to deal with this. They want government to raise their kids because they are too busy scrolling stupid Instagram and Tiktok or some bs.
    • You could make the argument that K should not be included, but FC, the fried chicken, is not the framework, it's the product. It's the Paint in Paint.NET. A closer analogy is if KFC included the name of the deep fryer they used. HennyPennyFC.

    • Apple is expanding Private Cloud Compute beyond its own data centers by Pradeep Viswanathan At WWDC 2026, as part of the improved Apple Intelligence capabilities, Apple today announced that it is expanding Private Cloud Compute (PCC), its privacy-focused cloud infrastructure for Apple Intelligence, beyond its own data centers for the first time. Private Cloud Compute was designed to handle Apple Intelligence requests that are too complex to run fully on-device. The PCC system does not store user data and does not allow Apple or anyone else to access user requests. Last year, Apple also expanded its Security Bounty program with rewards of up to $1 million for researchers who could find serious vulnerabilities in PCC. Until now, Apple's PCC data centers were using Apple's own silicon. As part of the expansion, Apple is working with Google and NVIDIA to run new Apple Intelligence workloads on Google Cloud systems powered by NVIDIA GPUs. Apple will be using this new infrastructure to execute more demanding AI tasks while maintaining the same privacy and security guarantees of PCC. The new implementation uses NVIDIA Confidential Computing with NVIDIA GPUs, Intel CPUs with TDX, and Google’s Titan chip. Apple says it has worked with Google to build additional protections beyond a traditional confidential computing deployment. Despite the expansion to third-party data centers, Apple claims that its core PCC requirements remain unchanged, including stateless computation, no privileged runtime access, non-targetability, and verifiable transparency. The company highlighted that it will continue to control the PCC software stack, and Apple devices will only trust PCC software that has been cryptographically approved by Apple. To take security to the next level, Apple mentioned that it is maintaining an append-only ledger of Google Cloud hardware that is part of the PCC fleet. The company claims this will help reduce the risk of supply chain attacks. In addition to AI infrastructure, Apple also worked with Google to use technologies behind the Gemini family of models to build the next generation of Apple Foundation Models to power Apple Intelligence features across on-device and cloud workloads. As expected, for more demanding AI tasks like agentic tool use and complex reasoning, Apple will rely on the expanded PCC infrastructure running on Google Cloud. The expansion of PCC on Google Cloud will gradually ramp toward the full set of protections during the summer preview period. As before, Apple will also publish binaries for public inspection, provide research tooling, and give researchers access to live PCC nodes in research mode through the Apple Security Bounty Program.
