JasonC
I don't seem to be having much luck with all this bank stuff, do I? A couple of weeks ago, I tried to purchase a new TV on my debit card, and was hoping to use the finance option available. I got all the way through until you have to pay, which is where my first problem comes in. I put in all my card details and then clicked next (this is on dixons website) then get a box come up wanting a few more details, like my name and card number, mothers maiden name. I used everything what I thought was right, then tells me I'm wrong and now won't be able to use my card on there site any longer, because I gave incorrect details. I later found out its a new thing that Lloyds TSB do (I think) called "Clicksafe", first time i've heard of it. Last time I used my card online was about a week ago when I brought something off play.com. I used my debit card out a little bit too, last wednesday, I withdrew a small sum from a cash point, a few days before I used it at somerfield, everything seems ok here. So now my problem, I tryed to purchase something else off play.com and for some reason it got declined...I tryed purchasing some things off ebay too, and the only option I have to pay with is my debit card (for this particular transaction, usually its a bank transfer), when I try and go through with it I get an error "This card cannot be used for this transaction. You can complete the checkout with another debit or credit card. Please enter your new card information below." I've never had problems like this before. Has the bank put a stop on my card or something? I don't know what to do, I don't like phoning them either, because they are always "northeners", and being a "southerner" I find it hard to understand them sometimes. But If I have to then fine. Cheers. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/773624-debit-card-problem/ Share on other sites

PixilEyes
Go or call the bank. Flip the card over and call the number. Wait wait scratch that. Give me the number, the exp date and the secuirty code. :D J/K Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/773624-debit-card-problem/#findComment-591008414 Share on other sites
Napalm Frog
Calling them is probably the smartest idea, especially if this is happening with many purchases. The only issue I've ever had with my bank card is on Steam, I get declined if I put in my primary billing address, but it works fine if I use my secondary one... lol. +Nik Louch Subscriber² Posted May 18, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted May 18, 2009 Visa Debit or Visa Electron? I have a Visa Debit, and there's an issue with them as follows... The card has an issue number. If you put the issue number in, sometimes it won't go through. Leave it blank - it goes through... lawtai
It's usually better to just call them. The phone number's on the back of the card. They'll be able to straighten anything out better than most people here can. Rich-E
Just call them, or as Bhav suggested - go to a branch. If you can't understand the person you're talking to, you can always make up an excuse that it's a bad line at your end and they need to speak slowly and clearly. You won't find out why it's being declined unless you speak to someone. They're generally not northerners on the end of the line either - on more than 1 occasion I've spoken to helpful ladies of various ages who I gather were from the Bristol area. The longer you leave it, the more it'll be an inconvenience to you. Subject Delta
Lloyds have their own anti-fraud stuff, everyone else just uses Verified by Visa. Call them, get the lock removed. Brian M. Veteran Posted May 19, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 19, 2009 Has your card been renewed lately? I had a problem with my Lloyds TSB credit card the other day, and it turned out that they had a system bug which reactivated my old card, and deactivated my new one by mistake (there's no feeling like having your credit card declined for no reason in the middle of a busy store - especially when it isn't your fault :p). Think you will find other banks also have their own protection. Nationwide also have online purchase protection, which gives an extra level of security when making online transactions. _bobcat_ Veteran Posted May 19, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 19, 2009 (edited) That Clicksafe thing is a pain in the backside. I can never remember the password I set for it .. it won't allow punctuation marks which are included in my standard "set" of passwords (I would never be able to remember 50 different passwords so some do have to be similar/the same). Anyway, on topic, did you check your account balance? I expect that if you have an overdraft facility they will just take it out, but if not, if your account is low then it might get stopped. Perhaps the card was blocked for a fixed time after the first time you were declined. You should phone or visit them next time to find out. Also ... do not go mad buying TVs and stuff on finance or with your overdraft! Unless you have the money available now/very soon you will regret it. In a few years time you will still be paying for any overspend now, but you will have nothing to show for it when that TV is old and knackered. I know because myself and others I know have made the same mistake and it's pretty bitter when you're paying out huge amounts to a loan company every month for something you don't even have anymore. JasonC
I usually don't buy that much stuff, when I do buy alot of stuff, I buy lots of little things that cost very little like I have recently, because I like modelling, so have been buying paints, and spray paints ect ect which are quite cheap. I don't have an overdraft, and don't really want one. Weird thing is, after I started this thread, like 10mins after it failed and i tried it again, its worked? maplecookie Veteran Posted May 19, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 19, 2009 We can't really give you an answer as to why it's happening. You may be typing in something wrong, it could be something at the bank, there could be an issue directly related to your card and the places you are trying to use it. You need to call your bank and find out what is happening just to ensure your card isn't going to be shut off, you don't have multiple charges or fees being added on. JasonC
I went to KFC last night with my mate and my card was being declinded again, so today I phoned them, and I was passed to the fraud department, just genuine things I guess, should all be sorted now though. WTF? Look, i really dont want to be rude or nasty to you mate, but lets face it, you have a really bad track record with this kind of stuff. I even said as soon as you mentioned credit cards that ill await the threads where you get in debt and confused on using it as well as then probably blaming the bank itself. So far i seem to be heading in the right direction wouldnt you say? My advice overall to you would be to stop using the card. Cut it up and throw it away after paying back what you already owe. From the things you have mentioned in this and other threads, you sound like you are using it for pretty much every purchase you make. This in my mind is dangerous. Using it so often and for such little things as a KFC, can mean you dont realise how much you have spent until its too late. Credit cards are not like debit cards mate. At least with debit cards you can go in to debt and not have to pay such crazy money back for being in debt. Credit cards mean you pay lots for being in debt to it etc and can dig yourself in to a large hole. Im not trying to be rude and im only giving you advise based on what i know of you from what i have seen in your threads in the past, please dont be offended, but just try to understand where i am coming from with this. Southern Patriot
i thought you cant use debit card unless you have enough money in your checking account. thats what a debit card for. you dont owe money for using debit card, credit card does. It seems that UK debit cards don't work quite the same way that ours here in the US do. They pretty much all seem to have some type of what we would call "overdraft protection" (a term they use differently there) or a limited credit limit on them. Most debit cards here in the US don't have that unless you specifically ask the bank for it, which leads to lots of confusion when both UK and US people are talking about debit cards in the same thread.
