Stokkolm
I've been trying for a few hours now to play WoW, but it keeps telling me that every single realm is down. Is anybody else experiencing these problems??

Geoffrey B. Veteran Posted May 19, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 19, 2009 i am assuming that you are a new player however, All realms are down on Tuesdays there should actually be a box to the left of the login box on the login screen telling you the approx. Time that it will be done for.

Sethos
you know to take that time and add ~3 hours  and +6-8 hours on patch days, plus an unstable server for the next 3 days.

Lord Zog
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/realmstatus/ shows all of them are down. Is it a maintenance thing? It's been about 3 hours now. They usually go down at 7AM EST and are back up by 2PM EST.. Times change tho as tuesdays maintenance usually goes longer. :) This ios every Tuesday they do this unless there is a problem with something.. Ya get use to it after a month or so. :p Tuesday's are good days to check for updated add-ons and other stuff.. :) and +6-8 hours on patch days, plus an unstable server for the next 3 days. Hehe.. 3 days after patch days aren't too bad.. its the day's after an expansion is released. :( With launch of 3.0.2, queue of over 3000 peeps... And bad lag.. With BC, unstable for like 2 months! hehe..
Vice
You would think that after 4 years of running the game that they would have devised a way to keep the servers up for more then 7 days at a time. I mean if you have 100 Realms it is conceivable that some are going to need more maintenance then others so why take all of them off-line at the same time it must take a lot of effort to do whatever they are doing every week on the same day to every server. I agree, I would never have expected them to bring all the servers down for maintenance at once, that's crazy. Oh well, I guess I'll have to find something else to do. Oh well, I guess I'll have to find something else to do. When they go down for maintenance, its all scripted to make maintenance easier for a server farm of that size and that many users.. A lot of Online RPG's have general maintenance days, just not as often as WoW.. Besides.. They gotta get paid for doing something over there.. :p The client itself is very buggy.. The least they can do is fix server side to make things as smooth as possible.. :)
Eric Veteran Posted May 19, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 19, 2009 It's difficult to reliably back up a database while it's being accessed by millions of users at one time. They also do updates to the server code more often than the client and that requires a shutdown, too.

I understand your point, but surely they could take half the servers down for so many hours and then the other half once those ones come back up. That way you could still play and it wouldn't introduce inconsistencies between servers, since the servers that haven't yet been upgraded would go offline as soon as the upgraded ones came up. This extended maintenance will begin at 3:00AM PDT on Tuesday, May 19th and we expect them to be playable by approximately 1:00PM PDT. Actually that would not really work that well being that your character information is not on every server it is only on the server that you play on for that specific character. Its not like runescape where your character is on every server.

What would be the point? Just to help people who are so addicted that they want to make another character on another server just to kill time? I only play on one server, so when it is down WoW is down as far as I'm concerned, I'm sure most of there players see it the same way and it's probably more efficient for their technicians to do everything at once. Plus they probably want to get it done while most people are at school or work.
