+jamesyfx Subscriber² Posted May 21, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted May 21, 2009 Hello, I've had my MacBook Pro for just UNDER a year, so the warranty is barely in tact (Expires 31st May!), and the Display has about 300 vertical lines on. Some are all different colours, but some are just solid black or white bars (like, a collection of 100 lines bunched together I assume). As far as I'm aware it's not accidental damage (The screen just kind of.. went wrong for no apparent reason one day). There are dents and some other cosmetic nicks in the shell, but it's on the bottom half - where the DVD-RW is - nowhere near the screen. Do you think they'll fix it for me gratis? Or am I screwed? Absolutely everything else works - the system works perfectly - it's just the panel. External displays work fine and all other things function as normal. It's just a bad screen. Yeah, the machine has been through some rough times. I've travelled a lot with it (and I mean a LOT), but thats the reason I bought it. I thought, it's made of metal.. it's expensive. It should hold.. But It hasn't! Im HOPING they'll either replace the screen or replace the entire unit for me. I've bought loads of Apple Products in the past including 2 MacBooks, iPod Touches and various other iPods and never had to make a warranty claim before.. this kinda surprised me. Any tips on how to argue my case if they don't budge? I have a feeling they'll assume accidental damage if they cast their eyes to the cosmetic damage. Thanks. I'm gonna pay a visit to the Apple Store tomorrow but I'd like a bit of advice if possible firstly!
Brian M. Veteran Posted May 21, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 21, 2009 If there's any physical damage to the screen itself (i.e. dent in screen, impact point), then they'll call accidental damage. You can try phoning their customer relations department if you want to, but they normally stick with their decision.
+jamesyfx Subscriber² Posted May 21, 2009 Author Subscriber² Share Posted May 21, 2009 The screen isn't cracked or dented physically in any way, but there is a very feint lightened area in the middle.. but it doesn't look like it's got anything to do with the vertical lines... I've noticed that was on the screen before the strange lines developed. Actually I noticed it a few months after I'd originally bought it. Here's a picture (Camera phone...) Note the white mark on the photo is just my overhead light. :p Nothing to do with the panel. But you can see the feint white line in this photo.. horizontal through the middle. It's not that obvious normally.. the camera must've picked it up better.
Brian M. Veteran Posted May 21, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 21, 2009 I'd say that'd be covered. It's too uniform to be caused by damage IMO.
+jamesyfx Subscriber² Posted May 21, 2009 Author Subscriber² Share Posted May 21, 2009 (edited) Thats what I was hoping to hear. It seems like something deep in the TFT panel. I don't think it's anything to do with impact on the surface.. Or there would be signs of it. Lets just hope Apple see it that way! I hear they're normally pretty good with warranties. Oh, and thanks for the quick responses! :) Edited May 21, 2009 by jamesyfx
VGVL
Something like that happened to my Macbook Pro a few weeks ago but on the left side of the display. I could apply light pressure under the screen directly over the "Macbook Pro" emblem and it would bring back some of the lines, so the problem was probably a bad cable. Apple replaced the entire display.
