Steam Account Hijacked

Recommended Posts

Last night I was playing a game that I bought through Steam, and I alt-tabbed out to Google something, and I see an email in my Gmail, saying that my Steam password change was successful...which I didn't do. So I maximize Steam, and see that I'd been logged out. Tried to log back in, and sure enough, incorrect password. So, I went thru all the crap to verify the account is mine, sent in an image of a scanned serial code for a game, all that. So far, no response from Valve. Has this happened to anyone else, and if so, how long does it take to usually get rectified? Or am I screwed?

I suggest aggressively pursuing this with Steam's customer service. I would be beyond angry if I lost all my games because of a password reset.

Not happened to me. I am sure Valve will respond to you within a day or so. Hopefully you will get it back though I know someone who only got it back after a few montha.

mine was also hijacked few years ago and I photo my game with the serial code and sent to Valve, they responded few days later and they send me a new account with a new nickname and password. Everything went fine, just wait few days for a respond.

Also, may wanna do this all on a separate computer as you may have a keylogger. I'd also change your e-mail password and any other passwords you may be worried about (again though on a separate computer). In the mean time cleaning up your main computer would be a good idea (formatting if possible).

Already formatted the system I'd been using Steam on. What ****es me off the most, I'd not had crap on Steam for the longest time, just old junk like HL2, the id pack, stuff like that. I just bought like, $150 worth of crap on there in the past few weeks, and bought DoW 2 retail, which ties into my Steam account. All of which I'm now locked out of. So I'm guessing my account has probably been compromised for awhile now, but there was no appeal to use it since I had nothing most people would want.

*edit*

Got the account fixed. Valve really impressed me, just over 12 hours since it was hijacked. Thanks guys.

Just try your best not to let it happen again. Remember, Valve will never ask for your password. Also, you might want to run a virus/spyware scan.

Happened to me about a month ago, I sent a photo of my Team Fortress 2 serial to Valve and got my account back in 5 hours.

There's often very convincing sites like www.mk-clan.net (DON'T GO THERE) That look exactly like Steam Community, but are really a scam site. Always check the url to see if it's steamcommunity.com before continuing the login.

I'm pretty sure they just brute-forced it, since it was a dictionary word, no mixed case, and all letters. Never really thought about changing it until it was too late.

Been hijacked twice now, got my account back without problems within a day or less.
